Question

Novell Netmail 3.1 nmap issues

Asked by: madcrb

Hello,

I am having issues with the install of  Netmail 3.1 onto a Novell Netware 6 server.

The issue is that when I look under the nmap section for the clients, it doesn't show any!
We can retrieve our mail from the main mail server, but can't send mail.

Does any one have a good basic walk through for dummies?  (novell.com wasn't much help)

thanks

madcrb

Join the netmail mailing list (you can sign up at http://www.nimsinfo.com).  It is monitored daily by members of the netmail engineering team, as well as users who really know NetMail.

Basic stuff:

Is NDS squeaky clean?

did you run NIMSEXT to extend the schema?

do the objects for the SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc exist in the Internet Services container?

At the console, do IMS UNLOAD.  Then from a workstation, delete the 'qclients' from SYS:NOVONYX\MAIL\DBF, then do IMS at the console

review the console log to see if there were any errors during the NetMail startup (CONLOG might help)

I followed your commands and verified (to the best of my ability) that the install process was followed.  I can use the webaccess and read all my mail off of my current (and soon to be removed) sun mail server.  The problem is when I try to reply or send a new message, it says that the message was sent, but never gets to the end user.  I can look in my queue and see 51 messages just sitting there.  How do I tell it to send those messages to my outbound mail server?

Thanks again for all of your help.

This begins to sound like a DNS problem.  NetMail uses it's own settings for DNS servers, and ignores the host server's SYS:ETC\RESOLV.CFG file

Using NWADMIN,  go to the properties of the messaging server (you'll need to right click on it and choose "details").  In the "resolvers" block, make sure there is the addresses of at least 2 valid DNS servers.    Write them down.

After checking that (and restarting NetMail with IMS UNLOAD / IMS is you made changes), at the console of the server hosting NetMail do a PING A.B.C.D (replacing a.b.c.d with the IP address of the DNS servers) to make sure they are reachable by the NetMail server.

Finally, check that there's not a firewall blocking NetMail's access to the outside world.

How do I have the netmail server hand all the mail traffic off to the firewall?  Where is the setting to tell it to send all smtp (mail) traffic to a specific host?

thanks,

Unless the firewall is also an SMTP or mail server, you don't really want to have your Netmail server hand mail over to it.

Rather, you need to poke a hole through the firewall telling it that it's OK for the NetMail server to make outbound connections to other machines on port 25, and that it's ok for other server to connect to the NetMail server on port 25.

The firewall handles all my smtp traffic.  But i can't figure out where to point the netmail server.  Does it automatically use the default gateway?

thanks

If your fire wall doubles as an SMTP server, then you can tell NetMail to use it to transmit all outgoing messages.

Using NWADMIN, go to "Internet Services"/ "Messaging Server"/ "SMTP Agent"/ "Options".  Put a check mark in the "Use Relay Host" option, and put the private IP address of your firewall in the box.  Save the settings, then unload/reload SMTPD at the console.

If the firewall is not an SMTP server,  then you'll need to tell it that it's OK for the NetMail server to perfom DNS queries and to open connections on port 25.

Here is the fix:
Go into NWADMIN for administration.  You'll have to repeat this process for each Agent that's not showing up in your NMAP agent.

Select the agent, click on the monitored queues tab.  You should see the NMAP agent your monitoring listed there.  Click the remove button to remove it from the list.  Once it's removed, add it back and click ok or apply.

After you complete this process for all agents, they should show up in the NMAP Agent.  This is a reported bug and I was told by the Netmail team that it should be resolved, but I'm not sure if it will be resolved in NetMail 3.5.  The problem is that recreating queues with either the webadmin interface or through NIMSEXT doesn't setup all the back-end links.  This isn't a problem though and won't affect the performance of the server...it just doesn't look as pretty when your clients list is blank.  I hope that helps.
