and how do i do it.

    by: dawho9Posted on 2003-09-04 at 15:48:18ID: 9292154

You could of course, just open up all ports and point the perferred server to the IP address and you can login and connect.  However, I would not suggest that to be your method of doing it.  If you want to, however, you could simply open some very specific ports.

The secure method is one of two that comes to mind:

    1.  Install Border Manager and use its VPN ability and connect to it securely through the VPN.

    2.  Install ZfD 4 Middle Tier server and use the Zen 4 Tools.  This method will sort of connect you, give you nal and you have other items.

The real question is, what are you trying to get too on this server.  Is it a home directory.  Then you could use NetStorage to access that and other drive mappings over port 80.  The other option for file access is to use iFolder.

    Hope that helps,

    Richard

You could also upgrade to 6.5 and use iFolder...

can i just put the ip address of the server into the server name field, the server is behind a firewall, i thought i could just port forward to the server, i'm sorta new to netware but ive setup servers and set rights but i don't know what ports it uses if at all possible?

    by: ShineOnPosted on 2003-09-05 at 10:14:28ID: 9297388

You need to pass NCP to access NetWare services.  If you can open up NCP over IP and your client can access them appropriately, it will work that way.

You will be exposing your server to attack by doing so.

A VPN access method is much more secure.

    by: ShineOnPosted on 2003-09-05 at 10:18:13ID: 9297410

I believe NCP uses port 528, but I could be wrong.  Do a search of the Novell Knowledgebase for filter exceptions and NCP.

Well, I'd do great in horseshoes... ;)

Only 4 off.  Not too bad for an old fart trying to remember a TCP port...

You also have to make sure that your server's network will route to your home PC's network.  Further exposing your NetWare network to the Internet.

I strongly recommend that you consider a VPN.  If not BorderManager, at least some other reasonably-secure VPN.

actually i have the novell server at home and i am just trying to learn more about novell while im at work

    by: ShineOnPosted on 2003-09-05 at 13:12:41ID: 9298532

Same thing, in reverse...  Exposing your home NetWare server to the internet is a risk.  Less risk than exposing a Windoze server, but still a risk.

If the necessary ports are left open on your corporate firewall, you should be able to access your home NetWare server...

    Good luck.

what would i put for the tree the context and the server, in other words where would i put the ip address or my fqdn

    by: ShineOnPosted on 2003-09-08 at 09:30:37ID: 9310457

You would want to put an entry in your HOSTS file (NWHOSTS for Win9X) for your home tree, with the home server's IP.

In your login dialog box, specify your home tree name and the login context normally, but specify your home server's IP address instead of the servername.

    by: NwDskPosted on 2003-09-09 at 08:38:28ID: 9321357

I would expect points going to ShineOn here (minus 4 points since he missed the NCP-port by 4 ;-)

To access over the internet by IP:
    - Configure your tree and context in the login dialog box.
    - When there is no firewall and SLP is properly configured leave server-name blank
    - When there is no firewall and no SLP configured enter server-IP-address at server-name
    - When there is a firewall and no SLP configured open port 524 and enter server-IP-address at server-name
    - When there is a firewall and SLP properly configured open ports 524 and 427 and leave server name blank
(SLP configured means DA setup at server side and DA/scope entered at client side)
