When a user is not logged into Novell, and starts and uses an application like: Microsoft Project 2000, Visio 2000, or Visio 2002, they sometimes get a Novell login window pop-up. This window usually has the: "currently logged in windows user" name filled into the username field. You can click on the cancel button a couple of times and wait for a couple of minutes and it goes away and everthing works fine. But this is very annoying for our users!
How do we stop this from happening?

Some of these are laptop users, when they are away from the office, they want to use the application without being logged into the Novell servers. So, they have to click on the cancel button, wait for about 60-70 sec., then click on cancel again, and wait for another 60-70 sec., very annoying!
I really need to find out what is happening here. I know that something is trying to access a Novell resource, probably a mapped disk drive or printer, but what is it, and how to get rid of the offending reference.
I've noticed this problem before too - it appears with some applications when they start and attempt to verify page setup and printer port information.
Try the following to see if it helps :-
1 - configure printing on the workstation to bypass the netware print queues and go straight to the printer using TCP/IP/LPR, if possible.
2 - set up a copy of the netware print queue as a local print queue on the workstation (same printer driver, same config etc except that it goes to LPT1:) and have the user switch to use that as their default when they are not logged in.
Not ideal solutions I know but worth a shot.
If you are focused on an issue with mobile users, it is a matter of them changing the default printer when they are not connected. If their default printer is a NetWare printer, the application (Excel, Word, etc.) will try to connect to that printer... I suppose you might have them try to change their default printers to offline mode, to see if that will forego the attempts at connecting to the Novell network to find the resources. Either that, or try to train them to set up a "local" printer for all documents they work on while offline, so they don't have the repeated connection attempts.

The simple answer - have them log into NetWare.
The complex answer - it depends on what your situation is. You have to give us some reasoning behind having your users bypass the Novell login to begin with, before we can help.
Why would anyone not be logged into NetWare? Is there a purpose or intent behind this?
When they get the Novell login prompt, their PC is probably trying to access a resource that has been defined to the PC as residing on the NetWare server to which the login is directed.
This can happen as part of whatever they are actively doing, or as part of a background task of Windows.
