Question

NetWare 6.5 LDAP ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server(81) iPrint iManager

Asked by: 4RunnerBob

NetWare 6.5 server MUSTANG is one of four NetWare servers on this LAN, one of the four is running NW 5.1 but is only used for images (no client access)

Problems with setup and configuration of iPrint and iManager lead us to find a repeating series of LDAP error messages:

LDAP initialization failed.
Configured LDAP was found ready to use.
NIF CertHandler: Root certificate file for master ldap not found, requesting a new one from server.
NIF CertHandler: # Root certs=1
NIF CertHandler: Retrieved certificate of size=1337
*MASTER(mustang.mustang.org) (-1) ldap_simple_bind : Can't contact LDAP server(81)
ldap *MASTER(mustang.mustang.org) down
LDAP initialization failed. Check LDAP and restart apache.

Running PKIdiag showed 0 fixable problems.

Check your ldap_server and ldap_group objects to make sure everything is "kosher" - that a valid SSL certificate is specified, and a valid user with appropriate eDirectory rights is defined and specified.

I don't know if this will help, but I seem to remember that by default under the  Authentication Options of the ldap group properties in imanager the
"Require TLS for Simple Binds with Password" check box was checked. check and see if that helps.

this tid is for a different product, but one of the errors was similar, maybe it will help shed some light onthe subject.

http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10067889.htm

Error: "ACL: ldap_simple_bind_s failed: Error=81"

Error: "An NDS API (Can't contact LDAP server) returned error (81)."
      fix

Try the following:
1)  Load ACLCHECK with more LDAP handles.  (Edit the APPSTART.NCF file and use the /C parameter).  The default is 10; try 20.
2)  Update iChain to Field Patch 3 (IC20FP3) or later.  (As of 1/28/02 FP3 is still beta and only available through Technical Support).
3)  Update NLDAP.NLM on the Authorization Server.
4)  Check all intermediary switches and firewall's TCP Timeout setting.  You may need to adjust this so that it is higher than the settings being used by OLAC/ACLCHECK.  The OLAC/ACLCHECK refresh rates can also be adjusted by modifying the SYS:ICHAIN\OAC\OAC.PROPERTIES file.  An iChain restart is recommended after changing.  At bare minimum, OLAC will need to be completely unloaded and re-start (including the associated Java process).  It may be possible to accomplish this at the iChain console with the following commands:

set authentication oacenable = (yes / no)
apply

good luck

sorry for the flood of posts, but here is another interesting TID from Novell.

http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10062292.htm

it explains how to trace LDAP activity.

If you're doing simple BIND with password and are using SSL/TLS, I believe it may be necessary to export the RootCert.der and import it to the client, so it can do the secure handshake.

Maybe for iPrint you'd want to use anonymous BIND, with an LDAP user object that has the specific, explicit rights to the tree that allow LDAP lookup?

We are still working on this set of issues.  Is there a set of step-by-step instructions for totally recreating the LDAP and related objects (without destroying anything)?
