Question

Netware 6.5 sp3 slow performance

Asked by: goeden

I am having problems with my Novell Netware 6.5 sp3 Server.  The performance dropped dramatically after we had our switch and router replaced.  To complicate issues our Cobol database software was upgraded the same week.  I have gone through the settings on the switch, router and server to make sure they are all at full duplex and not auto negotiating.  I used the remote manager to change configuration on the Nic card?  Is that the correct place to do so?  Any way after verifying the settings and checking network traffic I am fairly certain that it is not a communcation issue.   Well after checking the NIC settings I rebooted the server using the Down/restart option in remote manager and the server reboots but suspends specific services.  My tape backup is stuck trying to load, and the server doesn't really seem to come all the way up.  The server has become even slower.  I wanted to go into autoexec.ncf and shutdown unecessary nlm's but I can't do anything at the console.

I cannot enter commands at the console at this point and the server is just hung,  so I physically recyled the power on the server and it reboots and hangs again.

Please help!!!!

Yes, NoRM should be just as effective a route of configuring the NIC as any other method.

Try rebooting the server with the following parameters --> SERVER -NA -NL

That will supress execution of AUTOEXEC.NCF

I can't get to the console command prompt at this point.  I have gone it from a workstation and shut down the Antivirus and Backup software NLM's by editing Autoexec.ncf in Notepad, saving it and rebooting the server.

It is still stopping on boot up, it hangs after loading MERGETL.NLM (Error 327682 occurred while creating a Service Registry reference)  then the next nlm to load is the MERGECR.NLM and that is where it is stuck.

This is the Abend Log that I get:

It looks like you have Support Pack 2, not Support Pack 3 like you said.

You're loading the full set of Native File Access Protocol support. Do you actually use all that?

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-01 at 08:06:50ID: 18445155

I inherited the system from a Novell guy and am trying to learn as I go.  I have very limited training( mainly user rights and password maintenance ) so I am not really sure what the NFAP is or what it is used for.  I apologize for being new to this but I certainly see the benefits of using the Netware OS as opposed Windows.  I manage a number of Windows 2003 servers and find that they are very needy.  The Netware Servers that I work with are very stable and need little attention, which is also why I have not had to learn too much.

I also only have about 10% free space on the hard drives and I know that this can cause issues, but I would think it would be gradual not sudden, regardless I am having all users get rid of old stuff from the server.

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-01 at 08:15:10ID: 18445227

Ah, I see your situation.

Novell maintains an extensive online support website --> http://support.novell.com

This site includes an archive of freely-downloadable documentation for practically every product they've ever made --> http://www.novell.com/documentation/

The NetWare v6.5 documentation, specifically, is at --> http://www.novell.com/documentation/nw65/index.html

Novell Client 32 for W2K/XP documentation can be found at --> http://www.novell.com/documentation/noclienu/index.html

That section also documents login scripts.

eDirectory v8.7.3 documentation is at --> http://www.novell.com/documentation/edir873/index.html

I recommend you download those documents to have as a ready reference as you explore the environment.

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-01 at 08:23:00ID: 18445294

Next, as I noted, you're on Support Pack 2, which is about TWO YEARS old. The current Support Pack for NetWare is SP 6.

Since you come from a Windoze environment, I'll note that NetWare Support Packs contain bug fixes and enhancements only. They do not, for example, include changes to EULAs buried in the license text.

You can access the latest Support Pack and patches for NetWare v6.5 from Novell's download site --> http://download.novell.com/index.jsp?product_id=&search=Search&build_type=PatchBuildBean&families=2639&version=5423&date_range=&keywords=&x=39&y=11

Downloads are free, but you'll need to create an ID on their website.

There are some post-SP 6 patches available, but I think you need to get a handle on your environment before deciding what to patch. Definitely get ahold of SP 6. How many Windoze boxes do you run that haven't been patched for 2 years? You wouldn't even dream of doing that, would you?

Also, I suspect the AUTOEXEC.NCF is a confusing jumble to you. Take a look at this PAQ --> http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Netware/Q_22123001.html

It contains a rewritten/commented AUTOEXEC.NCF that will give you a roadmap to your own.

Back to your immediate issues...

NFAP is Native File Access Protocols. These services allow a filesystem hosted on NetWare (or Open Enterprise Server, aka OES) to be made available via other protocols: Appletalk Filing Protocol (AFP), Network File Sharing (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS). Respectively, these allow Apple Mac, *NIX and Windoze clients to natively access the hosted filesystem, without needing a Novell Client.

Just FYI, as of Support Pack 3, a NetWare v6.5 (or OES) server can also function as a Primary Domain Controller in an NT Domain.

If you don't use NFAP in your environment, then I definitely recommend disabling the functionality. You can do so be commenting out the following lines from AUTOEXEC.NCF:

# -- Added by AFP Install --
AFPSTRT.NCF
# -- End of AFP Install --
# -- Added by CIFS Install --
CIFSSTRT.NCF
# -- End of CIFS Install --

You don't seem to have the NFS portion of NFAP installed.

After commenting out all that stuff, are you still having the issue with the server?

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-01 at 10:19:42ID: 18446348

Yes, I have not yet commented out the NFAP stuff but the Autoexec.ncf that I posted is the current setup and is still hanging up.

The point in boot up wher it suspends is just after loading MERGETL.NLM.  I get Error 327682 occurred while creating a Service Registry reference.  Then it tries to load MERGECR.NLM but never finishes and just hangs there.

I have been talking to Dell on this subject Since it is a Dell Poweredge Server and they are going to try to walk me through stage loading after work tonight.

In the meanwhile I can only access the system through NORM.  Dell wants me to try rebooting into DOS and doing a SERVER -na to see if the Startup.ncf and Autoexec.ncf are effecting it.  They also wanted my config.txt file, but cannot find it so they want me to do a load config.nlm from the DOS prompt as well.

I will be doing that in an hour, so I'll keep you posted.

by: ShineOnPosted on 2007-02-01 at 16:40:31ID: 18449111

Those are all valid ideas from Dell, but I wonder - is this under support contract by Dell?  If they're charging you for these diagnostic steps you may be better off working with Novell support.  They aren't cheap, so if you don't have maintenance it will cost you, but, gee - Dell support for an OS issue?  <groan>

Anyway, I suspect that the changes made to the NIC setup is the root cause of your current bootup problems, and it may be easily fixable by resetting your server registry.

That will result in loss of persistent settings, but that's not the end of the world.  Those settings are those which have SET commands but once set don't need to have SET commands added to STARTUP.NCF or AUTOEXEC.NCF in order to make sure they are in effect with each system restart.  Running config.nlm, producing that config.txt file, should give you something to work from to re-create the SET entries in the clean registry.

However, I won't tell you how to do that just yet, pending the outcome of your adventures with Dell.

As to the general speed thing after changing switches, it could be just the switches themselves and the messing with the NIC and port settings may have been unnecessary.

Specifically, if the switches had spanning tree protocol on (which many do by default) they may have still been in "learning mode" which slows down all sorts of traffic.  Additionally, STP will do odd things in a NetWare environment like blocking multicast, unless you configure the switches not to block multicast.

Also, it is best to have the switch port and the NIC both set to auto/auto rather than picking a speed and duplex setting.  Having one set to fixed and the other to auto is bad - both the NIC and port should match - but nowadays you will get the best results from auto/auto.  If auto/auto fails you have deeper problems, like a bad NIC or bad or improperly run wiring in the run from the NIC to the switch.

The other thing you do need to do once you get the immediate lockup/abend issue resolved is to apply the latest SP for NetWare 6.5, which should all by itself improve your stability and throughput.  SP2 had all sorts of issues, and it's been a couple of years between SP2 and SP6.  Imagine leaving your Windoze server(s) unpatched for a couple of years.  Not a fair comparison, true, since NetWare may have addressed all of a half-dozen security issues in those years, while Windoze has that many every month, but...

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-02 at 07:38:45ID: 18453143

Well I worked on stage loading will Dell, but it seemed like once we hit a snag they were lost.  They are supporting the server OS because it was purchased with the server and they are not charging, so what the heck.  They pretty much could not help me fix the abend issue and recommended that I apply the SP6 to the server.  Don't get me wrong they were very willing to help but I just don't think they knew enough about it.  I would like to fix the abend problem before I apply a service pack but they thought that applying the service pack would fix the problem.

I cannot get to the command prompt so they emailed me instructions on how to install the support pack using NWCONFIG.  Will NWCONFIG run at the Server's DOS prompt?  Because right now that is the only prompt I can get to on the Server without it hanging.  We went through the boot to DOS and at the prompt I typed in SERVER -NA and it booted to a prompt.  That is where I ran the LOAD CONFIG I will paste my CONFIG.TXT below.

Do I need to do a DSREPAIR on the server before I apply the Support Pack?  I will backup the data, which will take forever at the current speed, but is there anything else I need to do before the update?

Here is my config.txt:

;  This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
;  Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
;
;  The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA.  This would be used
;  when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
;  configure the DA.
;  The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>, <addr>'.
;  The first word must be "DA".  The addr type is the address type.  Currently, only
;  IPV4 has been defined.  IPV6 will be defined in the future.  The addr is
;  the address specified.
;
;  The following is an example of a static DA.
;  DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
;
;  The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all services
;  of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope.  For example,
;  the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope "printer".
;  The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope name>"'.
;  The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed by quote on
;  a single line.  Example:
;
;  REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
;
;  The last line must contain a line feed and char return.  A semi-colon specifies a
;  comment.

I really think you need to get the hanging resolved BEFORE you apply the SP, unless you have determined that applying the SP is the solution.

I would suggest rebooting the server with the "-NA -NL" parameters.

When it finishes loading NetWare and executing STARTUP.NCF, you'll be at the console prompt (:).

I would go thru the LOADSTAGE commands and see where the hangup occurs. There are 5 stages, and you execute each in sequence like so --> LOADSTAGE 1

If you don't get all the way to LOADSTAGE 5 before the hang occurs, then it may be that not all the NetWare services needed for patching are available.

Your really need to solve the hanging issue, or at least identify the specific origin.

I appreciate the heads up.  I believe that when we used the SERVER -NA we then ran the Startup.ncf and it hung up on the ADPT160M.HAM, it gave a [reent fail] also on the IDECD.HAM and PEDGE3.HAM.  That's kind of when Dell gave up.  It was asking for twadmin and twagent which are loaded for the tape backup software.  I commented these out from the autoexec.ncf but not from the startup.ncf file.  Could it be that it needs to be removed from the startup.ncf to finish the stage loading?

Also not real clear on stage loading.  How do I get through it? Just by:

Server -na -nl
startup

confused?

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-05 at 07:07:50ID: 18468236

No, STARTUP.NCF executes before AUTOEXEC.NCF. The STARTUP.NCF file is roughly equivalent (in purpose) for the CONFIG.SYS file in DOS - to load hardware device drivers and set specific NetWare kernel parameters that must be set at initialization and can't be changed once the NOS is running.

OK, try this.

0) Get a printout or other record of STARTUP.NCF and AUTOEXEC.NCF

1) Reboot the machine and interrupt the boot sequence. Manually start NetWare cd making sure the current directory is the NetWare directory (probably C:\NWSERVER) and entering --> server -ns -na -nl

This will load the NetWare kernel, but will supress the execution of STARTUP.NCF and AUTOEXEC.NCF (technically speaking, the "ns" parameter implies "na").

2) Hand-enter to commands from STARTUP.NCF, one at a time. If the hang occurs, identify the module. Restart this process, but skip the module that caused the hang.

3) Once you are able to complete the commands in STARTUP.NCF without a hang, begin issuing the LOADSTAGE commands. Again, you want to get to LOADSTAGE 5 without any problems. If you run into a hang or problem, document it here.

4) If you are able to get all the way to LOADSTAGE 5, then start hand-entering the AUTOEXEC.NCF commands. Skip the comments, of course.

This procedure will allow you to pinpoint the offending module, and then we can determine:

a) Is it a necessary module?

b) If so, why is it hanging and what can we do about it?

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-05 at 07:10:32ID: 18468257

I know it *seemed* to hang on ADPT160M.HAM, but until you do the modules one-at-a-time, we can't be sure that's actually where the problem is.

ADPT160M.HAM is an Adaptec driver for the AIC-7892 and AIC-7899 chipsets. Are there devices in your server using those chipsets? You'd probably see them during POST.

If those chipsets are in your system, is anything actually attached to them? Can the associated function be disabled?

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-05 at 07:13:06ID: 18468278

Hmmm.... I just noticed the version/datestamp on ADPT160M.HAM - Version 16.21.13 March 25, 2002.

Is this server an in-place upgrade of an older version of NetWare?

I'm wondering if that's the proper driver/version for your hardware. It's rather old.

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-05 at 07:38:18ID: 18468491

I will set up a non production time to do the stage loading and let you know what I find.

The Adaptec driver is for the SCSI tape drive that is connected to the Server.  The Server is a fresh install of the Netware 6.5.2 on what was a new Dell Poweredge  server.  The Tape drive is an HP external DAT 72 drive and it had been working flawlessly for the last two years with this same driver.

Thanks for the help with stage loading steps.

"The Server is a fresh install of the Netware 6.5.2 on what was a new Dell Poweredge  server.  The Tape drive is an HP external DAT 72 drive and it had been working flawlessly for the last two years with this same driver."

Ummmm....how can it have been working flawlessly for two years when this is a fresh install?

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-05 at 13:59:08ID: 18471791

When I say a fresh install, I mean two years ago when it was installed, not an upgrade.

by: ShineOnPosted on 2007-02-05 at 15:16:26ID: 18472214

The adaptec driver is for the SCSI controller.  The tape drive has a separate driver, and depending on what backup software you use, may be specific to the backup software.  Case in point: ARCserve likes to use its own tape drive device drivers (regardless of platform - this includes Windoze Server 2003 SP1/R2).  As such the tape device drivers (NWTAPE, NWASPI to name a couple) should not be loaded if a software-specific driver is loaded (CANWPA for example).

Since you didn't upgrade any of the drivers yet, I suspect it's not the Adaptec driver - unless you are experiencing hardware faults on attached devices or don't have your bus terminated properly.

If what you initially said is true, I suggest that, as I said before, the NetWare registry got hosed while playing around with the NIC settings.

Maybe it's time to clear the registry.

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-06 at 07:06:25ID: 18476588

The Yosemite Tapeware software does ask for the default Netware drivers to be unloaded to work properely.  But yes nothing has changed hardware or software wise on the Tape backup end and no errors.

If the registry is damaged can you give me some guidance on that.  I will be able to take it down and work on it tonight.  I am going to backup all data at the end of day today.

Should I still look at Stage Loading or just the registry repair?

Thanks for the help!

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-06 at 10:29:20ID: 18478448

Doing the LOADSTAGE steps should uncover any damage to the registry.

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-06 at 11:48:04ID: 18479125

Okay, then once the damage is uncovered can you assist in repairing it?  Or is there a tool/utility that I can use to repair?

I will do the LOADSTAGE steps tonight.

by: ShineOnPosted on 2007-02-06 at 15:05:52ID: 18480593

It's rather simple, actually.

The caveat is that any persistent SET commands have to be re-issued afterward, but your config report should have all that listed for you under "set parameters."

You can also save the settings separately using the commands described in this TID: http://support.novell.com/docs/Tids/Solutions/10076626.html

The way to do the reset is:

Shut down.  At the DOS C:\NWSERVER prompt, copy the SERVCFG.* files (servcfg.000, servcfg.nbk, servcfg.tmp, etc.) to a save location, then delete them from your C:\NWSERVER folder.    They will be re-created with the default settings when the server starts.

Restart your server with SERVER -NA (to make sure extra stuff dependent on your  SET commands don't attempt to load and cause other problems)

The files will be re-created because they're not there any more.  All those SET commands in your "set parameters" list (or backup files) will have to be re-applied.  Do the obvious ones, like NSS settings, timesync settings, SLP settings and the like - hold off on device-related settings.

After you do that, restart the server normally - hopefully all will be well.

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-07 at 08:23:01ID: 18486063

I found the server hanging problem.  I had gotten too aggressive in the commenting out modules in Autoexec.ncf, I had commented out the ADMSRVUP command.  While going through the Stageloading and manual entry of Startup and Autoexec I typed in every command one at a time, even the ones commented out.

So the system booted properely, then I went ahead and applied the SP6 and rebooted when done.  I did some testing on the server(ran some applications that were running slow prior to the SP update)  and it is running but still seems too slow.

I did do a Purge on the volumes, which was in the instructions for the support pack update.

Is there a tool to defrag or optimize the Hard drives?  I was told by Dell that sp6 has enhanced hard drive optimization.

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-07 at 11:06:29ID: 18487534

Neither NSS nor NetWare's FAT suffer the disk fragmentation problems of DOS FAT or NTFS. Additionally, NetWare routinely caches the disk, further eliminating physical disk access as factor in performance.

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-07 at 12:20:24ID: 18488246

I am still having performance issues with the Server, any performance enhancing tips would be appreciated.

I also appreciate you guys holding my hand like a small child while walking me through the troubleshooting process.

by: ShineOnPosted on 2007-02-07 at 13:13:09ID: 18488671

Yes, it's unnecessary to defrag NetWare or NSS volumes.

There is a radical school of thought by some NetWare engineers that you get improved performance by backing up a volume, blowing it away, re-defining it and restoring it along with trustee info, but that's kind-of way out there...  I don't buy it.

What kind of performance issues do you have?

If it's network-related as you initally suggested, I recommend re-setting the NIC and switch ports both to autodetect and autonegotiate for both speed and duplex.  The hardware is a lot smarter than we are these days...

Then, if the problem persists, change out the patch cable from the server to the switch.  If it goes to a wall plate, which connects to a patch panel, which then goes to the switch, swap out both patch cables.

If it continues, run a patch cable directly from the server to the switch.

As you're doing this, check the stats for the NIC and the comm protocol(s) bound thereto, in NoRM, to see if you're getting retransmits or dropped packets.

Make sure the new switch(es) is/are configured properly, if they're manageable switches.

If the slowness is at initial login but speeds up, let us know.

If the slowness is all the time, let us know.

If the slowness worsens throughout the day, let us know.

If the slowness is only for filesystem access, let us know.  Also let us know what application is being used when that's experienced.

If the slowness is only for restore of files across the network, let us know.

If the slowness is only with specific applications or file types, let us know.

If I missed anything, let us know ;)

by: goedenPosted on 2007-02-07 at 16:00:38ID: 18490007

I have checked all network traffic and no packet loss or collisions.  I am using the Dell management software and had found an old Netgear switch causing some problems but removed that from the equation.

The slowness is constant, throughout the day.  We are simply using the server as a file server that stores data from peachtree accounting and a cobol program that stores it's database software on the server.

When we originally installed the Cobol program it would get database corruption errors and the company that supplied it asked us to turn off file caching and turn on file commit to remedy this.  I understand that this can cause increased traffic on the network because of the constant updating of the software. To fix the database corruption this was a price we were willing to pay.  Honestly the changes had little effect on the network speed and the alternative is to risk data corruption.

The change in speed seemed to appear after the cobol software was updated to a newer version.  They indicated that the runtimes were a little heavier and also took up more space.

The biggest issue is that when we run reports that are pulled out of these databases (Peachtree and Cobol program)  they take 30 minutes when they used to take 5 minutes.  Even just opening and saving Excel spreadsheets from a shared folder on the Server is slow.

I have other Netware servers with much less memory and slower processors in use by as many as 50-100 users at a time that are no running this slow.

Should I try to shut off File commit and turn on file caching just to test?

by: PsiCopPosted on 2007-02-07 at 16:10:19ID: 18490053

"the company that supplied it asked us to turn off file caching and turn on file commit to remedy this."

Yes, that should be SOP for *any* OS where the there is an application for which multiple clients simultaneously access the files. And yeah, Opportiunistic Locking and client-side file caching rarely give much performance benefit. I generally turn those things off as a matter of routine, anyway.

How many NICs are in the server, and are you bonding any of them? I'm wondering about network *latency* (as opposed to congestion) issues.

by: ShineOnPosted on 2007-02-07 at 17:48:54ID: 18490480

Yes, the chance of corruption isn't worth what minor gains you might make from turning oplocks on.

What you should also do is turn 'em off at the server with the SET commands

SET LEVEL 2 OPLOCKS ENABLED = OFF
SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED = OFF

(IIRC - that was from memory...)

The next thing to look at is the client itself - if you're running the Novell client, what version/SP/patch level and was it installed Custom or "Typical?"
