We have received a delivery of new Acer TravelMate 6592 laptops that are generally used for remote access to the office network.
From the start we keep experiencing problems with them at the point where the screen saver kicks in. We have not yet managed to build one stable image that would work even when these computers are connected directly to the network let alone connected remotely via wireless card and VPN.
We are still on Novell network and use Windows XP SP2 and after some trying and testing it seems that the problem is linked to the installation of the Novell Client. We are using version 4.91 SP3 for Windows (Version: 4.91.3.20061109) and get the following problems: - at the point when the screensaver kicks in the screen just starts blinking and possibly gets stuck - goes into the screen saver but is unable to recover from it and gets stuck
Upgrading to the SP4 and un-checking the on resume password protect box has seemingly resolved the above screen saver issues but now when trying to log-off or shut down the computer hangs.
We are also using another Acer model, Travelmate 6410, which works with no problems.

Which screensaver are you using? Some trash which came from Acer? Have you tried the basic Windows XP screensaver?
The Novell Client regularly gets the blame for everything from windows glitches to third world starvation. More often than not the fault lies elsewhere and it's simply exposed by the client. Novell code by the rules, whereas a lot of people don't.
I just attempted to setup 4 Acer notebooks for a client of mine (don't remember the model), but every single one would hang/crash @ shutdown/reboot. I think this is an issue w/ the Acer notebook itself, They returned the Acer notebooks, and bought some Toshiba notebooks, and they did not have that issue. Test your setup on a non-Acer notebook, and i'm sure it will work. Acer's are garbage.
Did this machine come w/ XP, or did it come w/ Vista and you loaded XP on it?
It a standard windows screensaver. Only reason that we suspect Novell Client is because we did some testing and everything seemed to work fine until we installed it.
To mhdcommunications:
Its an XP machine, and yes I couldn't agree more about Acer being rubish but we are stuck with them at this point...
