The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Moving a volume - best method?

Hi

I have a customer with a volume that is 35GB in size. It is storage of all their customers, scans, lots of details. They have purchased an additional drive.
The storage that they currently have is: 2x73GB SCSI in RAID1 + HotSpare.

Since they are at 95%, they are purchasing 2 new drives, another 2x 73GB SCSIs to be put in RAID1, where the HotSpare is going to be used for either array.

Now, once I create the new array. I need Netware 6.5 SBS to pick up the new array, which I'm assuming it automatically will (i'm sure it has done in the past) and Now I would like their single data volume which is 35GB in size to be moved to the new array.

What would be the best way to do this with the tools available from the NetWare installation?

Why not simply partition the new array using NSSMU, then add its storage capacity to the NSS pool currently containing the volume? Suddenly your volume won't be 95% full any more.

Thanks for the suggestion but this has been ruled out (it was the original suggestion).
Just need to know how to move the volume and all its associated permissions etc.

Thanks!

I guess there's plenty of ways to do it but you'll have to choose the option that works out best for you.

[1] You could simply backup the entire volume and restore it on to the new server / partition.  This would require that you had available licensing for the server however - but that may be in your arena.

[2] You can purchase JRB Utilities (I'm like a walking advertisement for them, I know) and use Netcopy:
http://www.jrbsoftware.com/jrbutils_nw/utils/netcopy.htm

Netcopy will have you (as an example) map a drive to the old server volume and another to the new server volume and copy everything at once, or span it out at your convenience.  Note that for the 700 bucks or so that you spend on the utilities suite, this is just one piece of invaluable software you get from his toolset as a result.

[3] Netware Server Consolidation and Migration Toolkit is another option, possibly.  Check out a quick run-down of its features here:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/scmt/scmt12/data/hz8pck9v.html

People will choose different options for different reasons.  Personally I go the JRB route because if anything goes awry, there's always another tool to help fix your ailment, if necessary.  At any rate, consider those 3 and let us know if you have more questions.

I eventually created a new pool from the new RAID1 array. Added a new volume to it. Backed up and restored from tape of the current volume. Renamed the volume to the original and did away with the old one. We now have much more spare available to this volume.

Thanks!

So you took my first suggestion as the solution, performed it, then wrote about and selected your comment as the solution?  Well yeah, I guess I object to this, sorry.

Sorry Ghost96,

It was very late and I was trying to tidy up my EE account. I scanned your answer and didn't realise you had suggested a backup/restore route. Sorry!
