Browse All TopicsWindows XP SP3 computer, Novell Client 4.91 SP4.........login process hangs for approx 30-40 seconds (everytime!) from a cold boot. After the hang, the login proceeds normall without delay. Subsequent logins and log offs the rest of the day occur without hang or delays. Only when rebooting or powering on from a cold boot does this delay/hang occur. I do not have a stopwatch, but the time period of the delay (30-40 secs) is the same everytime. Its almost as if the client cannot find the tree (or server) and something is then timing out. Does not give an error message, just the classic novell "busy" icon. then the busy icon goes away and you can reenter username and password and get right in. Other info: preferred server that workstations log in to is a Netware 5.1 SP8 box.

You might be able to get a better idea the slowdown is happening if you originally log into the workstation using the workstation only checkbox, then manually log into the network using the Novell Login option from the client right-click menu.
Then you can verify the tree, preferred server, etc, and see at what point the lag happens.
Yeah, in regards to SLP, it's critical in 6.5 environments but I'll be honest - never had to have it enabled and configured in any 5.1 environment to this date. Never ever ever.
6.5? Yeah, pretty much a requirement if you want things working right, but in 5.1 I have yet to see SLP make any noticeable difference. Of course, YMMV, but that's my experience at a countless number of networks.
I won't rule it out however... ;)
Want to find out quick if it's an SLP issue? When you login to your server, login via IP address instead of the server's name.
You can do this 2 ways for testing to see if there's a difference:
[1] Keep the tree and context in there, but put the IP address in the server field instead of the name. Record the time.
[2] Remove the tree name and the context completely. Put in the IP address of the server. Login and record the time.
Any cause and effect on this happening? Any changes that were made recently?
Does it go any faster if you were to add the server name to your actual HOSTS file on the machine?
