Question

Netware 6.5 cluster node frozen

Asked by: TREXman

Hello,
since a few weeks we have a problem with our netware cluster. First of all i'll give you a short explanation about our environment.
Server:
- 2 Netware 6.5 SP8 cluster nodes (slave NDS replica)
- 1 Netware 6.5 SP8 non-cluster server (master NDS replica)
Cluster resources:
- iPrint
- ZENworks 6.5
- Groupwise 7
- Data share

Now to our problem:
Once a week crashes one of the two cluster nodes (crash means, the console is frozen and no abend.log). The Cluster resources will be migrated to the other healthy server.
If the users wants to logon, is this not possible. They got the loginscript which runs for new useraccounts and the pc reboots. To solve this situation, we run a dsrepiar.

In the dsrepair log you can read the following message:
...
ERROR: Adding reference to object ID: 000092DB, DN: CN=WAC_152_1_<user-a>_00:0D:56:8C:B8:05.OU=Workstations.O=DE.T=<treename>

...

After the dsrepair, the user can normal login with their roaming profiles.

How can we debug this problem?

Best regards,
Trexman

Hi,

I'm not sure, but you want to trace what has been appended to the server ?
Have you performed an NDS Health Check ?
http://www.novell.com/support/php/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=3564075&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_TID_1_1&dialogID=28070813&stateId=0%200%2033464893

Also check for obituaries.
Hope this can help you,

Hi,
thanx for your answer. I will try the NDS Health Check and post the results hier.

Of course, i would like both cluster nodes running without crashes :)
But if one node is going down, the other automatically have to do all cluster task, without a manual intervention.

Hi,
normally NetWare cluster, if correctly configured, permit you to have High Avaiability on services. This mean that you can work without problem with one of the remaining node.

How many NetWare server have you ?
How many NDS replicas have you ?
What are the services in the cluster ?
Have you clustered DHCP, DNS, SLP, NSS, services ? This is needed by your network to work properly.

Hope this can help you,
Giovanni Coa

Hi,
i noticed the following point at the NDS Health.
Here i will show you the screen of the Point "Time Synchronization" of dsrepair:

View Log File (Last Entry): "SYS:SYSTEM\DSREPAIR.LOG"  (8221728)

 /****************************************************************************/
NetWare 1602.00 Directory Services Repair 10551.81, DS 10554.34
Log file for server ".Server2.DE" in tree "treename"
Time synchronization and server status information
Start:  Monday, 16 March 2009  13.09.00  Local Time

 ---------------------------+---------+---------+-----------+--------+-------
DS.NLM    Replica   Time        Time is     Time
Server name                 Version   Depth     Source      in sync      +/-
 ---------------------------+---------+---------+-----------+--------+-------
 .CR1.DE                        10554.34    0       Single      Yes            0
 .Server2.DE                   10554.34    0       Single      Yes            0
 .Server1.DE                  10554.34    0       Single      Yes            0
 .Server3.DE                  10554.34    0       Single      Yes            0
 ---------------------------+---------+---------+-----------+--------+-------

Server2 and Server3 are the two cluster nodes with the slave NDS replica
Server1 is not in the cluster and have the master DNS replica

I'm confused about the entry of ".CR1.DE". This is one of the cluster resource and not a netware server.
If this is right, what about the other cluster resources?

Hi,

please check your timesync configuration because it seem that you have only SINGLE server on your network.

NetWare and SLES severs need to sync time in a hierarchical basis.

Check that on Documentation:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/oes2/inst_oes_nw/index.html?page=/documentation/oes2/inst_oes_nw/data/h2qqkfry.html#h2qqkfry

NetWare cluster create a resource for services.
For the file system services it creates a virtual server to use it as reference in the login script and network shorcuts.

Please post your :

"cluster status"

and

objects in the cluster view.

Hope this can help you,
Giovanni Coa
