Thanks for the reply but tried all of the above previously and no it does not use a crossover cable.
I think the problem lies with SP3 as it was working prior to that being installed.

Network cable unplugged
Hi all, I have a customers computer running XP, the internet connection is a satellite modem and they have been using a lan cable to connect.
After installing sp3 the connection no longer works and says network cable unplugged when its not. We have tried changing the nic, changing the cable everything possible you could think of and still nothing.
The internet connection no longer works, so I have rigged up a dial up account for them that works.
I read someheere that this can be caused by sp3 so tried to uninstall that but it is not listed in the windows updates! There is no system restore points as it is turned off.
I did a repair install using a slipstreamed sP3 XP disk and that made no difference. The modem works, the cable is good, the nic is good but it still says the network cable is unplugged. I have tried all suggestions listed here to fix but still no go, I am at my wits end! I have done virus scans, spyware scans everything is clean. There is no firewall.
Any suggestions please?

Here is some information on the various ways to remove SP3.

There seems to be no fix to cure this problem apart from formatting the hard drive and reinstalling XP with SP2 instead of SP3. It seems SP3 is the culprit along with Vista as nether are compatible with satellite internet!
Because this customer had no backup I am going to install a new hard drive, install XP with SP2 and use their existing drive as a slave so they can access their old data.

Have you tried locking down the speed of the NIC. Sometimes, if the auto-negotiation of the NIC speed fails, you'll see the "cable disconnected" error.
Are you using the latest drivers for the NIC?
If you put a small hub or switch between the NIC and the satellite, does the card light up?
When you changed the NIC, did you remove it from device manager first, then let Windows re-install the drivers?
Does the hookup require a cross-over cable (probably not, since it was working before, but worth a shot)
