I found a similar problem on a novell forum, it states that the drivers that Dell provides aren't the latest and greatest:

http://forums.novell.com/novell-product-support-forums/open-enterprise-server/oes-netware/oes-nw-abends-hangs/128424-dell-2500s-perc2-ham-abends.html

It is better to retrieve the certified driver perc2.ham from the novell website:

http://developer.novell.com/devres/storage/drivers/#Dell

Also make you are using the ACPI platform driver (ACPIDRV.PSM) and not the MPS14 (MPS14.PSM)

You did not mention the server hardware you are using so I will assume it is a Dell Poweredge server. The Dell array configuration software has been a problem going back to NW5.1 and it can cause abends in the HAM. If you are not running a multiprocessor server then as stated above use the correct platform driver. However, the problem could also be that the firmware needs to be updated on the RAID controller. You did not mention when you updated the software and if it just started happening with the ABENDS or not. You may have a situation that updating the HAM will make worse. Check the firmware version as well and you may need to do that. Try one fix at a time and watch for what yields the desired outcome. Just don't start throwing updates at a problem. First analyze what  changed and then go from there.
 Good Luck.

Nothing has changed on server. Server just started freeze up since last month. Now its doing at everythree days.
and we notice that server freeze up when backup is running. We will try robocopy for couple of days and unload the veritas backup. We are using Dell PowerEdge 2550 Server.

You did check the versions on the drivers, yes?

Also, is the backup device (tape drive?) connected to the same controller as the hard drives?

It is usually better to connect a tape drive to it's own controller (and not on a RAID controller)

How do I check versions on Drivers??

by: ErekoseHPosted on 2009-08-11 at 07:05:43ID: 25069168

It sounds like it is the backup that is causing it. Would you please tell us about the hardware and software you are using, where it is attached, etc. This problem has been seen with certain backup software By the way you are running a multiprocessor box as you have a P01 so you must have a P00 as well. Typing modules at the console can tell you what modules are loaded. Driver info can be found from loading config and checking where they are (what directory) and then you can find out from there by the date, etc.
Thanks

From my above link:
What you need is the following:

Firmware: 2.8.1

Driver: perc2.ham version 2.80 dated 1 November 2004.

Note that the date is very important here. Dell is in fact also
distributing a 2.80 driver, but the Dell version is older and is known to
cause serious problems on NW 6.x servers.

I agree with deroode. You need to update the Firmware and get latest HAMs for the server so that when the backup kicks off it does not cause this problem. It appears that this is causing the drives to lockup and abends the server.Good Luck

It's not in my habit to complain, but in this case i would have expected at least some assisted solution points... Marking an "I agree" comment as an accepted solution doesn't help the knowledgebase very much...

.I am sorry about that. I did a lot of research as well as you I am sure. If I could give you a split on the points I would. This is not a competition to me. I am a MCNE and a Directory Engineer and this is fun and keeps me sharp. I have been a MCNE since 3.X and kept up through 6.5. I am not here to brag or grab points. I enjoy helping out and solving problems so that I can learn in the process, especially since Novell work is real slow here in NY.

Hi, ErekoseH, pleased to meet you.

Of course my comment wasn't directed at you, since you're not the OP. It seems you're in EE for the same reasons i am. Unfortunately my boss (University) doesn't digg Netware anymore and we're now moving over to MS because "everyone else does". I try to keep up with 6.5 and OES but i don't get that much time for that anymore...

Pleased to meet you as well deroode. I have been in the same situation for almost 2 years. If you want to chat I enjoy making new friends. You can send me an email and I will be more than happy to talk tech wit someone as I enjoy doing it. Wish I had more work and $$ but that seems to be in the golden days of IT which are long gone. Have a great weekend and nice working with you!!
