adding a static route in netware 6

we are trying to add a connection to a remote office via a cisco 3560 switch. Our address space is 192.168.1.x, theirs is 172.16.x.x.

Our netware box is connected to a Dell 5224 switch at 192.168.1.21, then to the cisco switch (192.168.1.230), and then to a t-1.  A workstation connected to the cisco switch can see the 172.x.x.x network and successfully ping various 172 addresses on it.

I've added, in tcpcon for now, a static route
Destination 172.16.0.0
Mask 255.255.0.0
Next Hop 192.168.1.230 (the cisco switch)
Type remote

from the netware box, I can ping the cisco at 192.168.1.230 but none of the 172.16.x.x addresses.  What do I need to do?

You'll probably have better luck if you use INETCFG.

In Inetcfg.nlm - Protocols - TCP/IP you should enable RIP, that way the netware server will get routing information from the cisco router. That way it shouldn't be necessary to add a static route to the netware server, just as you probably haven't added static routes to your workstations.

That's just an interface though, doesn't give me any guidance as to how to get the routing going between these networks.

Not it's not just an interface.... You're enabling static routing at the protocol level.

When you fire up inetcfg, don't just go into interfaces, go into protocols, then TCP/IP and set the route. I don't use Netware any more, but inetcfg had no problems setting static routes for me for the best part of 10 years.

What's the default gateway set to in the 172 network? Is the ping able to get back? Is ping enabled in the Cisco for that route?

ok, we fixed it by setting up a vLan in the Dell switch on the 192 network.  Thanks everyone for your comments.
