The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

protocol.ini setup on peer-peer ntwk

Asked by cynth in OS / 2 Network Security

BACKGROUND:

I have an OS/2 4.0 peer-peer network set up w/ 3 computers.
The network is up and running fine, but I am running into
errors when I try to make multiple database calls over
the network.

The error is telling me I have insufficient NETBios resources
to make the db call, and I am sure it has only to do with
the various protocol.ini & ibmlan.ini parameters (all 3
machines have 128MB of ram - certainly enough).  The problem
is, my knowledge is limited to the following and how they
work:  SESSIONS, NCBS, and NAMES.

There are a few other parameters which are mentioned in the
OS/2 documentation, but no information is given about them.
They are:  MAXTRANSMITS, DLCRETRIES, NETBIOSRETRIES (in
protocol.ini) and BUFFERS, THREADS (in config.sys).

I anticipate a max of 200 network connections at any one
time - at present, however, I am looking at only 3 or 4, and
I am getting this error on the 3rd connection.

My present settings are:

                 PROTOCOL.INI      IBMLAN.INI
SESSIONS:           254                100
NCBS:               255                150
NAMES:               21                 14

With these settings, I can't imagine I am getting this error.  So,
I am wondering if there are other parameters I should be looking
at.

Also, the 'Performance Tuning Assistant' does not come with
the peer-peer networks software so I do not have this tool
at my disposal.

QUESTION:

Can anyone enlighten me as to the functions and valid ranges
of some of the Protocol.ini & Ibmlan.ini parameters and how they
relate to resource usage?

Thank you kindly,
