Cannot play AVI files in Windows Media Player 10 & 11

This is a problem on a friend’s computer.  He used to be ale to play AVI files but cannot now (but cannot remember the circumstances).  I have tried many different AVI files from different sources.  The result is always the same, the file loads but nothing happens.  The first frame is displayed but will not play.

He has recently upgraded to version 11 but he says it was like this in version 10 (that’s why he upgraded as he thought it might fix the problem).

I have uninstalled codecs, installed various codec packs.  The result is always the same.

However the files will play in a DivX player.  So that is the short term solution.

All files will play perfectly in WMP on my own computer.  I have tried to install same codecs on friend’s computer but result is always the same.

Gspot indicates everything is fine with the file but will not play the file either?

Any ideas?
