Compaq SR1750NX says I am not an administrator

I am reinstalling the OS on a Compaq Presario SR1750NX that one of our techs bought from Ebay. It came without the OS and no factory software, neithere OS or drivers CD. I purchased a copy of MS Windows XP Home edition from an internet site and it installed fine. When I went into the Device Manager I noticed that 3 Unknown devices had yellow question marks next to them. There were labeled as Multimedia audio controller, SM Bus Controller and Unknown device. I deleted them and restarted the PC, but when it discovered the new hardware, I could not find the drivers on the PC. I then went to Compaq website let it scan the PC and downloaded the PC tools application which stated that it would aid me in troubleshooting the PC. When I went to run it, it said that I was not logged in as an administrator and ended the install. There is only one user and it is the admin. I even tried to do the install in Safe Mode where the 'Admin' login appeared on the login screen, no good. I created a new login with admin rights and still no good.

Why won't this PC let me install the apps when I am the admin? Does a compaq PC 'need' to have their own software restored on their PCs via a restore disc? or should I be able to use the version that I purchased from the internet store with was an OEM version?

thanks in advance.

If you haven't done the Windows updates, I'd do that.  I'd also check to see if there is a bios update.

Right on the money. I reinstalled the OS and not only did the 'I am not the admin' error disappear, but the OS installed itself on the C: drive rather then the H: drive, which I also thought was perculiar.
