Question

Microsoft, Remote Desktop Connection 6.1, Can't connect to remote computer, I just installed XP SP 3

Asked by: moskalik

I have been using a couple of specific Remote Desktop Connections  for years without problem.  I just installed XP service pack 3 and I see first a window informing me that the "Publisher is unknown".  After clicking connect on this screen I get an error screen saying "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."  This error comes up immediately (no wait for network timeout, etc.)

In a possibly related issue, outlook gives me this error:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.hrgems.com', Server: 'pop3.hrgems.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
when I try to receive email.

sp3 removes the /console option. try using the /admin option instead if you are using the /console switch.

Can you be more specific.  I am using the Remote Desktop Connection application.  What settings do I change ?  On what tab?

Regarding your Outlook Error:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191687
Port 110 Blocked perhaps?

Run command in CMD window:

netstat -an

If it says comes back with anything other than the following about Port 110, then something is blocking it:

Proto Local Address          Foreign Address        State
TCP    0.0.0.0:110            0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING

Remote Desktop Connection uses TCP Port 3389 by default.  If this is blocked, then it may explain the issue.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-09-03 at 20:23:52ID: 22384100

I believe asian_niceguy was probably assuming that you were starting the RDC session from a Command window using a command like:

MSTSC /v:12.345.678.90:3389 /w:800 /h:600

One of the command line switches was /console

From what you say though, you are either opening a saved *.rdp file that you previously configured, or you are running C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe and configuring the connection manually for each session.

I'm curious to know if any of the remote computers are only running XP SP1.  If so, look at the "Advanced" tab under "Server Authentication Options" and click on the help file link entitled "What are my server authentication options".  Apparently XP SP1 is unable to provide its identity properly for authentication, so you have to lower the setting to "Connect and Don't Warn Me" if it is set to "Don't Connect".

by: moskalikPosted on 2008-09-03 at 20:41:51ID: 22384148

Yes, I am using a saved rdp file.  I ran netstat -an and I don't see port 110 or 3389 show up (not sure how to get you listing, it won't let me copy and paste from the cmd window), but it is showing port 80,135,443,445,1025,1027,5679,6877, etc as listening.

Do I need to turn on those two ports?  If so, how do I do that?

by: moskalikPosted on 2008-09-03 at 20:43:54ID: 22384157

I can't answer you question regarding what the servers are running as I can't log into them (they are part of a server farm in another state) but they have been regularly updated so I do not believe that either of them would be back at sp 1.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-09-03 at 21:12:19ID: 22384249

To copy from a CMD window:
Scroll over text to copy.
Right-Click the window's Status Bar (or left click the little C:\ icon at the left of the Title bar) and choose Edit > Copy.

If that doesn't work, open that same menu and choose "Properties".
Under the "Options" tab, check the "Quick Edit" box and click OK.

Also I see some messages like his in the event log at startup (may not be related):
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( LiveUpdate Notice Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

This occurs for live update, viewpoint manager and ipod service.

Open your saved rdp file in notepad, then change from "connect to console:i:1" to "administrative session:i:1".

It turned out that the problem was Symantec was not fully unistalled on my machine.  Once I fully uninstalled it, the upgrade worked.

I suppose that this question should not be closed. Ectually, this problem - remote connection to PC that runs Windows XP SP3  can't be established and this is a big problem.

I suggest to experts to look the article by Mr. Shijaz Abdulla on the web site http://blog.shijaz.com/2008/01/no-more-mstscexe-console.html to get some ideas perhaps.
I sincerely hope that you will find the solution
Kind regards,
Mlukic1

by: mlukic1Posted on 2008-10-11 at 13:39:25ID: 22695258

If I understood mr.Shijaz well, you should type as follows:
Try to run remote desktop from the command prompt:  Start Run Cmd.  type in:
mstsc /admin bla.rdp
PS
You have to form bla.rdp file on the client PC to which you want connect and that runs Windows XP SP3 or Win. Vista SP1 or Win. Server 2008.

Kind regards,
Milan
