Also, verify the pop server is running by telnetting to it on port 110 (telnet "the name of the pop3 server" 110). Do this with the firewall/virus scanning on and off to verify.

Browse All TopicsMy client has been using Outlook 2003, but they have recently upgraded to Outlook 2007. Their email has been working fine since the upgrade to Outlook 2007. This morning, however, they started receiving the following error message while in Outlook. "Receiving Reported Error 0X80040900 - The server name you entered cannot be found on the network. It might be down temporarily. Verify that you are online and that the server name is correct." Incoming emails appear through their online Webmail Account, but the incoming emails are not downloading into their Outlook account. They are also unable to send out emails from their Outlook account. Their website is up - www.pretc.net - just having problems with the emails downloading into Outlook. To me, this does not seem to be a problem with the hosting company that hosts the website and email, but rather a problem with their computer or Outlook program. Any help is appreciated.

Regarding the solution of verifying the pop server is running by telnetting to it on port 110, I want to be sure I understand how to do this. Do I go into the Outlook email account and change the pop3 server from pop.1and1.com to telnet? And then do I go into the Advanced Settings for the email account and make sure the Incoming server (POP3) is 110?
Also, regarding disabling the windows firewall and any third party virus scanning/firewall temporarily, if this resolves the problem, what then?
The error "The server name you entered cannot be found on the network" means their Exchange Server or what ever the Email Server they are connected to is not working, offline or network routing is not working.
You have to find out the name of the Email Server, then try ping or telnet, make sure it's reachable, if not, you need to find a Networking person for that site to resolve the connectivity issue.
Their website has nothing to do with this problem, this is their Email Server's problem.

Try disabling the windows firewall and any third party virus scanning/firewall temporarily.
