Question

SMTP Inbound/OutBound Controls on Lotus Notes (R5) - 5.0.10

Asked by: ianmclachlan

Hi Guys,

I am setting up POP3 on Notes R5 5.0.10 to allow my windows Mobile devices access to email

Sending/Receiving internal mail works well.  Receiving external mail also works well.  However, I am unable to send mail because of restrictions on the SMTP configuration page.  Getting the usual error :

"SMTP Server [09F0:0004-0F3C] Attempt to relay mail to
*****@*****.co.uk rejected for policy reasons. Relays to recipient's domain
denied in your configuration."

I am convinced its under Restrictions and Controls in either the SMTP Inbound or Outbound Pages, and have a tried a number of changes to allow my local subnet relay access ie :
tried to add ....   192.168.100.*  to where I thought appropriate   .....without any luck.

** The devices are on the local subnet

After making changes, I have immediately bounced the server "tell smtp quit ...load smtp", however, it still refuses to send.

I thought I would try here to see if anyone knows.

Any help given will be greatly appreciated and of course awarded the points

Cheers

Hi sjef_bosman,

Yes, I bounced the router as well - same problem.

Although,  I have moved forward a little.  I read an artcile on the IBM website that had the ip address entries with [ ] round them.  Tried this, restart SMTP / Router services and now I am getting a different error:

"DELIVERY FAILURE: Router: ***@****.com is restricted from sending mail through server ******"

I think the SMTP issue is now resolved, anyone any suggested about this new problem?

Many thanks in advance........

I don't have R5 any more... In current releases, you can both Allow and Deny, but one excludes the other (I think Deny has priority).

Just a 2nd... What mail address do you use when you send mail from your Mobile via the server? That's the address that should be allowed to be relaid by the server. Does the Mobile device have an internal IP-address? Then use those addresses in the Allow-section.

Hi sjef_bosman,

I think I have managed to fix the problem, just testing the mail relay aspect of things right now.

Basically, If you allow a domain name in one section (where it specifies) ie... sampledom.com and also try and add ip adresses in another  ie 192.168.1.* (where it specifies these should go) then its doesn't work.  It has to have one or the other.  It also demands [192.168.1.* ] round an ip address range.

I have certainly seen this sort of senario between Allow and Deny, but not Allow and Allow.  One thing to remember if anyone needs to do this in the future is, use login creditials to the outbound (smtp) section on the mobile client or outlook etc.... or it also won't send even though you have specified to allow the ip addresses.  It appears SMTP needs the IP and the router needs Notes authentication.

Strange but it works on my system.

Thanks for all you help.  I will award you points for your comments

Thanks!

Just curious: did you try without the sampledomain.com in the above picture? That domain is the domain-part of your mail address I assume?

Hi,

The sample is a touch misleading (I included it as a pointer to people as to the section I was in - sorry should have made that clear)  For clarity,  its just got the local ip address range in there and nothing else.  If I put the domain name in there like it suggests, then no mail goes at all.  All very strange.  Although I am no expert on Notes.

Regards
