Well Paul, DK stands for Yahoo! Domain Keys. It came about as a method for Yahoo to validate the source domain of a message to prevent spoofing (right now I can send you an email claiming to be from exterts-exchange.com and you don't really have any way to verify that).
It uses a public/private keypair. The private key is placed on the MTA and used to generate a crypto signature which is placed in a specialized header. The public key goes in a specially formatted DNS TXT record on the domain. When Yahoo! receives the message they go to the DNS of the From address, pull the public key and use it to validate the crypto signature. This tells them that 1) It came from that domain and 2) The message has not been modified in transit.
DKIM is an industry adoption of DK. They added some new futureproofing bits and some flexibility but the principle remains the same.

Can you let me know what platform you are trying to setup DKIM for?
