Exchange 2003 Event ID 7004 and 7010

Tags: 7004, event, 7010, id, exchange
I am running a single 2003 exchange server sp2. I am getting event 7004 and 7010 with email being received from external exchange servers from other organizations facing the internet. I have been getting these errors for a long time and never noticed them until now. However these errors are not disturbing mail flow in any way that I can tell. Also note that I am not smart hosting and I temporarily disabled antivirus on the exchange server and IPS on the firewall to see if its the cause of the problem and it isnt. After reading for a while I have yet to come to a conclusion as to weather or not these event ID's are normal? My guess is that they should be ignored since they are from other exchange servers not in my organization?

Here is a 7004 event:
------------
This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #37. The remote host "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", responded to the SMTP command "xexch50" with "504 Need to authenticate first  ". The full command sent was "XEXCH50 2296 2  ".  This will probably cause the connection to fail.

Here is a 7010 event:
------------
This is an SMTP protocol log for virtual server ID 1, connection #39. The client at "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" sent a "xexch50" command, and the SMTP server responded with "504 Need to authenticate first  ". The full command sent was "xexch50 2884 2".  This will probably cause the connection to fail.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.
