Error #5.5.0 smtp;553 when sending external mail from exchange 2003

I am an administrator in a school running Exchange 2003
When sending external mails uses are receiveing Undeliverable error messages.
The error message is shown below.

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.
            <server.domain.uk.com #5.5.0 smtp;553 <user@domain.local>: Sender address rejected: Domain not found>

Our system has an internal domain of domain.local, and an external domain of domain.uk.com

The correct reply address for the mail should be username@domain.uk.com, however it seems that a reply address of usernam@domain.local is being sent, which external email servers reject.
(Note, internal mail works fine).

I've looked through articles and can't seem to get anywhere.
Current settings in Default SMTP Virtual Server - advanced delivery are
Masquarade domain = domain.uk.com
FQDn = server.domain.local.

I've tried setting the FQDN to server.domain.uk.com, (DNS check says invalid), and it makes no difference.

Anyone have an idea?

You don't need a separate policy for the .local addresses, as long as the default policy is enabled. The key thing is to ensure that all users have two email addresses - a .local address and a .domain.uk.com address.
