The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for gmail , hotmail.....
Tags: microsoft, exchange, 2003, 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for gmail , hotmail.....
I have an exchange server in my domain. Inside my domain, I can send email to gmail, hotmail with no problem. Also I can send email back and forth to pop3 client when they are not in domain.

The problem is when pop3 client try to send email to gmail or hotmail, they always get this message "550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for XXX@gmail.com" . If this is sending to my domain, the mail can be relayed.

On the pop3 client, which is set as the  default account - the exchange account of the POP3?

01.19.2008 at 12:18AM PST, ID: 20696577
sorry, I don't really understand what you mean...

The user is using using outlook at home and configured as pop3 client to retrive email from exchange server. let's say my domain is abc.com. If he send email to anyone@abc.com it will work, Also people send email from gmail account to his email account it's also working. The problem is only when he send to gmail, hotmail he will get this message.

Is it for a single user or all users?
Is the problem with pop3 clients only? what about MAPI (Microsoft Outlook) Clients?

01.19.2008 at 12:54AM PST, ID: 20696633
Sorry, I think I didn't describe my situation clearly. Because I thought it was also not working like this senario.

Actually, I have an exchange server and for the SMTP virtual server, everything is set by default, except I fill out smart host IP there [10.0.1.2]

I also setup a SMTP relay server (10.0.1.2).

On Exchange:
- Allow incoming mail to be delayed to this domain is checked.
-Forward all mail to smart host [10.0.1.1]
Relay: only the list below
Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay
Everthing else is default setting.

On SMTP relay server
Default SMTP virtual server property:
Ip address:10.0.1.2
Relay: only the list below:10.0.1.1
Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay
Everthing else is default setting.

If I disabled the SMTP relay server, pop3 email client send to gmail is wroking.

01.19.2008 at 12:56AM PST, ID: 20696637
Sorry, the first one should be SMTP relay server, and the second one is Exchange

So the NDR generated by server 10.0.1.2. Wonder why are you using SMTP relay server for.
For a test, can you change your POP3 clients settings to use your SMTP relay server to send emails?

01.19.2008 at 01:06AM PST, ID: 20696658
Let me rewrite this...
exchange ip: 10.0.1.1
SMTP relay server ip:10.0.1.2

On Exchange:
smart host:[10.0.1.2]
Everthing else is default setting

On SMTP relay server:
- Allow incoming mail to be delayed to this domain is checked.
-Forward all mail to smart host [10.0.1.1]
Default SMTP virtual server property:
Ip address:10.0.1.2
Relay: only the list below:10.0.1.1
Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay
Everthing else is default setting.

Does the ISP  have the proper reverse DNS entries?

01.19.2008 at 01:12AM PST, ID: 20696666
how can I check this?

01.19.2008 at 02:52AM PST, ID: 20696804
I just fixed the problem.

The problem is in the outlook client. I need go to outgoing server -> check My outgoing server (smtp) requires authentication. And below, select log on using: type in username/password.

Also, check the log on using secure password authentication(SPA)

Thanks for opening the case. Like i explained earlier, I have mailbox server in 2-node cluster(active-passive).
The third server is CAS as well HT server with POP3 & IMAP. Since most of our users use POP3 and also use mobiles to download emails. From outlook i can connect to our excvhange using POP3, I can receive emails also.
Earlier all was working fine, but now i started to get the error 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay.....
The fourth server is the ET which is placed in DMZ as smtp server.
authentication is plaintextlogon.
pls. let me know if more info is required.
thanks in adv.
