The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Restricting SMTP relay to send to local domain only
Tags: Microsoft, IIS/SMTP, 2000/2003, SMTP relay, restriction
Hi all,

I've set up a SMTP server that I want to relay mail for another web server.
I want this server to ONLY relay for our internal domain and not external.
I've had some success with this if I specify the domain under the the virtual server and specify our exchange server as the smarthost. If I use telnet to send the email it doesn't allow relay for external domains, which is what i want.

Example:

220 domainremoved.co.uk Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at  Tue
, 22 Jan 2008 15:56:21 +0000

helo
250 domainremoved.co.uk Hello [10.36.1.80]
mail from: carl.vaneijk@domainremoved.co.uk
250 2.1.0 carl.vaneijk@domainremoved.co.uk....Sender OK
rcpt to: carl.vaneijk@domainremoved.co.uk
250 2.1.5 carl.vaneijk@domainremoved.co.uk
rcpt to: carl.vaneijk@yahoo.com
550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for carl.vaneijk@yahoo.com

The same goes for Outlook Express as the client:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'carl.vaneijk@yahoo.com'. Subject 'test', Account: 'TEST', Server: '10.36.1.80', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for carl.vaneijk@yahoo.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
Right - all well and good.

The issue arises when we use an application of ours on another IIS box to send mail's to this server. The mails will actually send to yahoo.com!!!!!

we're using CDO.Message to create the emails.

Any ideas are welcome

I'm assuming all your servers are on the internal LAN. and that only the exchange server can send external. I also assume that you're using the built in SMTP server that comes with windows looking at the Helo reply.
here goes....
On the SMTP server you need to go into the SMTP server settings (right click on Feault SMTP Sever - click properties) and click on the Access tab
Next click on the relay button and add the ip address of the web server -  this allows relaying through the SMTP server.
Although this in theory will relay all mail to the exchange server, by default exchange will not relay mail unless configured to do so but will accept mail for its own domain.
Hope I've got thsi right...

Tx Chris,

I already had those options set, but you did give me an idea which has solved my problem:

It seems that by default the SMTP service allows relaying for the remote domains and aliases within the domains container of the SMTP virtual server.

By having my web server in the allow list it was allowed to relay for ALL domains.
REMOVING the web server from the allow list now denys relaying for anything other than the remote domains in the domain container.

I have tested this with:
relay denied and localdomain and yahoo.com specified as domains and it sends
relay enabled and it sends
relay denied without yahoo and only local domain specified and it only forwards messaged to local domain.
