Does Exchange SMTP or the SMTP connector support SSL?

Does the Exchange SMTP connector only support TLS and not SSL? This has been said in news groups.

However, the Exchange 2003 Resource Kit uses the terms TLS/SSL interchangeable. For instance (p. 859): "Exchange servers and clients can use two encryption technologies that are based on certificates. These technologies are Transport Layer Security / Secure Sockets Layer (TLS / SSL) and S/MIME ..."

My understanding is that TLS 1.0/1.1 is built on SSL 3.0 and is supposed to offer a fall-back to SSL 3.0. The software -- in this case the SMTP connector - should negotiate TLS version 1 or SSL version 3
automatically (RFC 2246 "The TLS Protocol Version 1.0")

Never the less, TLS works fine with my Exchange and ISP, SSL with Outlook and my ISP, but no SSL with Exchange and my ISP. Start Free Trial
