Need Superfast Telnet 101 Tutorial

Asked by JayneCobb in Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Email Servers

I'm trying to telnet to an email server. Any attempts I make (from two different PCs, one XP and one Vista) generate a Connect Failed error.

I'm typing:

telnet actualdomain.com 25

I know that, once I connect, I can type HELO name@domain.com to test a specific email address. But I can't even get that far. What's blocking the attempts (I've tried numerous domains for which I know the email servers are good)?

I'm behind a simple Linksys WRT54G, incidentally, using AT&T DSL.
