Hi
Just a quick question on SMTP to clear something up in my head.
Internet > SMTP Gateway > Exchange
MX records for both domains point to their respective SMTP Gateway.
Say there were two MTA's (mail.companya.com and mail.companyb.com) trying to connect over the internet to send an email. I assume one MTA opens up a connection on port 25 to the other, and the mail is sent.
Ok, now say that a user is Company A wants to send an email to two users in Company B. Am I correct in thinking that (assuming only one email is sent), there is still only one SMTP connection that is opened up between the two MTA's? If so, at which point is the email 'replicated' to multiple recipients? Would it be on the SMTP gateway or, say Exchange?
And, carrying on from this, if the same user now sends the same email to two users at Company B, and one at Company C, there are two *simultaneous* SMTP connections opened up from mail.companya.com - one to the users at Company B, and one to the user at Company C?
Any clarification much appreciated!
