Additional alias for an intern

Wehn setting up a intern account on our network I was wondering if I can have the user name like "intern" but then add in the email address of the intern user (in AD user's and Computers) an email address like johnsmith@company.com?

So in effect the user could login as "intern" on the network but the outside clients would see his email as :johnsmith@company.com. I'm doing some test with this configuration but I'm finding that any email test from the outside world gets an error that says failed 5.7.1 but there is no "unable to relay" or anything after. I removed the display name and real address in the message below.
