Question

Problem sending outbound mail via hmail

Asked by: DATABAX

We have set up a hmail server and have no problem receiving mail which goes via hmail on pop3 but if we try reply to that mail, we get the error of:
"An error occured while sending mail. The mail server responded: Mail server configuration error. To many recursive forwards..Please check the message recipients and try again"
Has any one come across this error before and if so, what are we doing wrong?

Have you checked these settings and configured your firewall correctly. Opened port 25 smtp.

http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/?page=ts_send_messages_outside

Not sure if this applies

"Too many recursive forwards" occurs if you have specified a catch-all address in your domain settings which does not point at a valid account or alias.

Using your first link (http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/?page=ts_send_messages_outside)
Checked and tested the Firewall, all is ok,
I have also checked the MX records, all looks ok also,

We havent defined a catch-all address for the domain so does this still apply?

by: Ub3rm4nPosted on 2008-06-23 at 03:36:45ID: 21844841

No I would say it wont apply in that case.

Did you do the first test to be sure your ISP is not blocking port 25?

by: DATABAXPosted on 2008-06-23 at 03:40:58ID: 21844863

We have checked these settings and we can telnet into port 25 on the hmail server no problem.

Can you send emails to other addresses?

by: DATABAXPosted on 2008-06-23 at 05:13:42ID: 21845309

Well, now it's getting interesting. We can sent to hotmail/yahoo mail accounts without it giving any errors but it doesn't reach the hotmail/yahoo mailbox.

by: Ub3rm4nPosted on 2008-06-23 at 05:44:45ID: 21845553

Ok so I think the recursive forward problem was with the address you were sending to.

http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/?page=reference_error_messages

Has the email still not come through to the other addresses? Then we have a new problem.

The mails get delivered as soon as i put a SMTP relayer in the delivery of email settings under SMTP protocols. This indicated that there must be an issue with port 25 some where. Ok, lets try and explain this setup. hMail is loaded onto a 2003 server which sits behind a BT firewall. The BT firewall is open to allow traffic through port 25. If I tenet to "mail.hmail.com 25" from an external machine, it gets in. If I telnet to an external exchange server from the hMail server, it connects to port 25 but If I telnet from the hMail server (2003 server) to itself "telnet mail.hmail.com 25" it fails. I think this is telling me that port 25 is blocked outgoing from the hMail server. Do you agree with me and if so where would i start to look.

by: Ub3rm4nPosted on 2008-06-24 at 01:40:36ID: 21853470

I dont think it is a problem with closed port if you could connect with an external machine. When you say external you mean outside of your firewall?

When you go through these steps are you seeing a mailserver list?
Select Start->Run
Type nslookup
Click OK
Type set type=mx and press Enter
Type gmail.com and press Enter

Did you have a mailserver set up previous to this using this line (IP)?
Some mailservers like yahoo etc will block mail from certain IP's to cutdown on spam.

by: DATABAXPosted on 2008-06-24 at 03:25:47ID: 21854015

Basically the problem I am having is if I am on the hMail server and I try telnet myself at telnet mail.hmail.co. 25, it does not connect but if I telnet other mail servers, it does connect and i can see mailserer list.
