Receiving External email using MX Record

Asked by Wytech_Wire in Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Exchange Email Server, SBS Small Business Server

We would like to set-up our Microsoft Exchange server to accept external emails.  Currently, we use POP3 email accounts to handle external email.  Ive done some research, and it appears that we would have to redirect our MX records in order to accomplish this task. I contacted my ISP and they can redirect our MX record, however, I want to know if there were any additional settings or concerns that should be implemented before we redirect the MX record??

With our new configuration, first our ISP would receive the emails, then our new MX record would direct the mail to our firewall.  Our firewall would then translate the address to the internal IP of Exchange server and distribute the emails to the appropriate client mailboxes.

We can send emails via Telnet, does that necessarily mean that our server is configured to accept incoming SMTP traffic on port 25??

Are there any options on SBS 2003 that we would have to enable/disable/change to accept external emails??

If we were to implement this, we would like as little downtime as possible, so your input is greatly appreciated!!Start Free Trial
