Question

552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size

Asked by: gcdtec

I am recieving this error when sending a large 13mb email attachment:

Is this my service provider not allowing such a large attachment to be sent or is it the email recipients server rejecting the email because of the size?

To be simplistic - Is this my problem or The Recipients Problem?

Error returned to my inbox:

There is not really enough information in the error message as it is not reporting properly what mail server it is talking to.
If you look at the headers of the error email that you received it will tell you what mail server generated the error. The server which sends the error is happy with the email but it is the next one it itself is trying to send the message to which doesnt like it.

Mail server normally report their maximum message size so it is possible to lookup the information. However you obscured the destination email address so I cannot tell from that either. If you at least post the destination email domain I can look it up for you.

Thanks,

But how do you check the a recipients email address  to see what size attachment it can handle?

telnet to their mail server on port 25 and send a EHLO greeting and it should say.

For example lets check microsoft. First do a dns lookup. I am using linux here and on windows you would use 'nslookup' and set the type to mx.

$ dig microsoft.com mx

; <<>> DiG 9.5.0rc1 <<>> microsoft.com mx
;; global options:  printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 7491

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;microsoft.com.                 IN      MX

;; ANSWER SECTION:
microsoft.com.          3600    IN      MX      10 mail.global.frontbridge.com.

Nowtelnet to the mail server and give a EHLO greeting.

$ telnet mail.global.frontbridge.com 25
Trying 216.32.180.22...
Connected to mail.global.frontbridge.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail111-va3.bigfish.com ESMTP Postfix EGGS and Butter
EHLO my.domain.com
250-mail111-va3.bigfish.com
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 150000000
250-ETRN
250-STARTTLS
250 8BITMIME

So microsoft accept mail up to approx 15MB in size.
The final thing to bear in mind is that attachments have to be encoded when they are sent by email so they grow by approx 25%. Therefore for microsoft you can send up to about a 12MB file (12+25% = 15)
