The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'person name' on 3/09/2009 7:29 PM
550 relaying mail to mydomain.com.au is not allowed

the outgoing server is mail.mydomain.com.au

we have the outgoing server set to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication with "user same settings as incoming mail server.

But we still get the 550 relaying mail to mydomain.com.au is not allowed

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ive offered webmail to the client, but they are unsatisfied with this option.

Have you thought about using HTTPs over RPC - then you can be anywhere in the world - you just need a working internet connection?  This is assuming you have an Exchange 2003 / 2007 server to play with!

Have a read of this article from the leading EE guru Mestha - http://www.amset.info/exchange/rpc-http.asp

Failing that - it seems that your mail server is blocking authenticated access from outside of Australia.  You could setup a VPN if you have a server so that he connects via VPN first, then this should resolve the problem.

Anyway - get him off Outlook Express if you can - it is seriously lacking in features.

Do you host your own mail on your own server or is it hosted by a third party?

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:04:27ID: 25255425

We use the US provider media temple.

They host the mail.

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:05:43ID: 25255431

This client does not have an exchange server.

its pop3

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:08:36ID: 25255439

Okay - I'd be inclined to have a word with the provider and ask them why your client cannot access their mail using authenticated access outside of Australia.

It should work anywhere - but it sounds like they have probably bolted it down for anti-spam / security reasons.

We do have a vps using plesk.

Ive just checked all setting on the mail server.

Do the settings in the image attched look ok?

ive just contacted the service provider.

Looks okay on that part - would be interested to see the rest of the DNSBL's that you are checking against and also if the SPF could be blocking him based on his email address / IP address combination.

Your ISP should be able to advise you on that more.

I just implemented a country block list on my mail server - so far Brazil, China and Czech Republic are on my hit-list as they send me plenty of unwanted spam.

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:45:02ID: 25255646

Here is the full list.

sbl.spamhaus.org;xbl.spamhaus.org

As far as I know the client is in europe somewhere.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:50:05ID: 25255674

Okay - those don't block by country - they just list by IP's that have spammed so they should be fine.

Convinced it is an ISP issue where they don't allow relaying from foreign IP addresses as an anti-spam measure.

What did the Service Provider say?

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 15:57:00ID: 25255728

It looks like the internet connections that he is sending from abroad have port 25 blocked, which outgoing mail is typically send through.

You can get around this by adding an alternate SMTP port to your server and having him switch over to that, instead. Instructions for doing this can be found in our KB guide at:
http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/83/

That is always a distinct possibility - I should have thought of that one :-(

Run through the article and setup port 587 and then get your client to change the settings in Outlook Express to use port 587 and then he should be okay.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262658 - to change the port numbers in OE.

Yeah.

This article relates to a particular server they offer. which we don't have =)
Will have to upgrade.

Thanks.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:10:11ID: 25255814

Nice - don't they have any other alternative solutions?

Is the upgrade expensive?

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:18:07ID: 25255855

Free upgrade.

includes php 5 etc.

just takes many days to migrate all clients over and test sites etc.

big month ahead.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:22:13ID: 25255875

Well - I guess that's a blessing (in some respects).

Can you test easily for the client in Europe?

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:33:21ID: 25255944

I will move this client over to the new server and get it going.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:34:38ID: 25255953

Good luck - hope it does not take long.

by: SWHostingPosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:35:50ID: 25255958

ta =)

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-04 at 04:32:20ID: 25258460

Did the tests work?  Is your client happy?  Did you get any sleep?

Thanks for the points.

Best wishes

Alan

Ive got him using webmail.

Ordered the new server, which should be coming soon, the all will be ok. thanks for the followup. not many people do that =)

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-04 at 05:18:00ID: 25258733

Excellent - hope that keeps him happy (for now).

Hope you get all sorted once and for all soon and no more problems in the future.

I don't always followup - I guess because you had not put a comment down on your acceptance - I felt the need to make sure you were okay.  Just consider yourself special ;-)
