Question

MX Record Issue

Asked by: sharkbot221984

Hi I've got a customer that says that they can't email one of my email domains, they get a 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected error returned to them.  What's interesting is I am able to send test email from Gmail account and it comes through no problem.  When I do a tracert on the mail.mydomain.com it points to OpenDNS, but when I check my MX record it points to my mail server's IP.  Also in the error message that the customer gets the IP address identified as being associated with the email domain is completely wrong, not my server's IP and not even the OpenDNS IP returned by tracert.

I would have them check their OpenDNS setting to make sure that your domain is not blocked by them, and even if not have them whitelist it in OpenDNS - see if that makes a difference in the IP Addresses being returned

Just to clarify the email server is primarily using mail.mydomain.com, but it also hosts several other email domains, @mydomain2.com, @mydomain3.com, @mydomain4.com and so on.  The TRACERT is being done from my workstation and it returns OpenDNS.
Example:
tracert mail.mydomain.com -> returns my server IP in 1 hop.
tracert mail.mydomain2.com -> returns OpenDNS

Emails are working for mydomain2.com BUT should I change the MX record from pointing just to the server IP to mail.mydomain.com instead?

Also did a whois lookup of the IP returned in the error message and it is our domain name/dns hosting provider - don't think that is a coincidence but maybe.  Wondering if my DNS MX record is not right?

it does sound like the DNS MX record is not right for the NS Server at the domain host - i'd set it to the ip for the mail server, even if several other domains are using the same mail server, the mail server itself should provide the way to sorting those out itself ...

The DNS MX record for that domain is set to the IP for the mail server already, shouldn't matter anyways even if it was set to mail.mydomain.com that address just points to the IP for the mail server anyways.

I agree the mail server is sorting it out itself, maybe this was just a fluke, or the problem is with the sender's mail server/DNS..

Based on the input received and the fact that this is 1 (that I know of) out of countless emails for this domain I don't believe that this is an issue with my server.

Thanks.
