Question

Can't access FTP on an SDSL line.

Asked by: esdxr26

I can't access FTP using my SDSL line. I am using dreamweaver at the moment (although have tried using a browser and net2ftp as well) and it times out. My ISP have tried everything possible, several engineer visits, provided new routers, a new line, changed MTU settings, opened the firewall on my zyxel prestige 792 router. They also tested port 21 using VNC to a standalone server which they knew to be working and they advised they could see the connection on their router, but the connection still timed out on my laptop. I have ruled out the laptop as a potential cause by using another router and now feel all avenues have been exhausted but wondered if anyone had any other possible solutions to this problem.

Where is the ftp client and where is the ftp server?  Meaning

     FTP CLient <--- SDSL Link --> Internet <--- ???? ---> FTP Server

or is it :

     FTP Serrver <--- SDSL Link --> Internet <--- ???? ---> FTP Client

I am using dreamweaver on my laptop which is connected directly into the SDSL router which is connected directly to the internet. I have tried connecting to 3 different FTP servers over the internet but they all time out even before I can authenticate.

I'd suggest you try some basic TCP connectivity checks - use TELNET to telnet to port 21 of the FTP server in question - if your screen goes black then it means that the 3 way handshake was successful, i.e. you have comms. If it fails, it will return after a few seconds stating that.

By the way the logic of ruling out the laptop as a potential cause by replacing the router does not work.  Ruling out the laptop means you've tried another computer.  Have you tried another computer?

If the ISP is suggesting that they can see the TCP connection happening on their side then it looks like the path back to your machine is failing.  I'd suggest you re-examine your router configuration and ensure that you've not set any static routes, incoming rules our outgoing rules which could affect standard NAT.

telnetting to the ftp server times out on port 21. Another computer has been tried. The weirdest thing is that I have the ADSL line sitting next to my SDSL line and when I plug the ethernet cable from my ADSL into the SDSL it stops working. My ISP have turned remote management to the router on using port 21 and when they try and access it it times out at their end, however I hjave factory reset the router and set up a DMZ to rule out any rules blocking access and have also tried several routers...

O.K., to make sure I understand this.  You have two Internet connections, ISP#1 (ADSL) and ISP#2 (SDSL).  When you are connected to ISP#1 and to ftp to "ftpserverA" it works.  When you then connect too ISP#2 and ftp to "ftpserverA" it fails?

If that is true then either:

      1) the ftp server is not allowing the IP address you get when connected to ISP#1

or

     2)  it is blocking the IP address you get from ISP#2

The problem with this is that my SDSL ISP have given me a brand new line with a fresh IP, so it would therefore be unlikely that the FTP server was blocking the IP. I have alos tested to another FTP site and this also times out, therefore it cannot be the server side blocking the IP address.

--> be unlikely that the FTP server was blocking the IP

They may not be blocking it, but they may not be allowing it.  Some FTP server's are setup to only allow specfic sites.

There is nothing you can do at this point from a technical point of view.

Your ISP can trace traffic for you and if you know the person running the ftp server they can trace traffic for you.

But, I am assuming here, if the traffic is leaving your computer you can't do much.  Once it his the SDSL modem, you no longer have any view of the data, only your ISP and the ftp server can see it.
