Question

Walkthrough for setting up SSL access to Exchange 2007

Asked by: DavetheKing

Good Afternoon,

I have just finished setting up my own server with Server 2003 x64 with Exchange 2007 x64 installed. I have registered my own domain, lets call it www.mydomain.com

I have setup mx records to point towards the static IP, and I can send and receive emails to the exchange server so I know that is functioning.

I have also purchased a SSL certificate from godaddy so when people access the https://mydoamin.com/owa their browsers don't complain and also so when setting up mobile access for emails they don't complain.

However I would love for someone to help walk me through setting up the certificate and adding it to the server correctly. I don't want to blunder in an screw it up.

Thank you very much!

Hi DavetheKing,

You can have a look at:
http://www.amset.info/exchange/singlenamessl.asp

Hope this helps

thank you for being so prompt. However that was a bit too far along for me. I am still at the stage of just bought the certificate but have not done anything with it, as in not even applied to the domain.

It is asking for a CSR to generate the certificate however I am not sure what kind of information is needed, let alone how to create one correctly.

Oh ok. so you bought a certificate from an online CA? How did you apply for the purchase? Did you run the Wizard?

by: DavetheKingPosted on 2009-08-06 at 23:40:15ID: 25040338

yes I bought from godaddy.

Now it is asking for me to generate the certificate request.

Does that mean that I would generate one through IIS for www.mydomain.com

or do I generate one through exchange?

Hi,
I think till now you have not got any certificate from Godaddy
please go to this site https://www.digicert.com/easy-csr/exchange2007.htm
on this site you can put all the domain names and the URL you want (If u want to go for the SAN certificate) Which is useful for Autodiscover service...Click on generate
After u click on generate site it will give you a command and you need to run that command from the Exchange management shell
That command willl generate a .CSR file under C: Drive. Open that file this is your CSR request and you need to send this to Godaddy and then they will give you a new certificate
after you get the certificate please import the certificate and enable it and your users will be able to access OWA

Thanks,
SAM

If you have purchased a single name SSL certificate from GoDaddy, then I would look at whether you can return it and get a SAN/UC certificate instead, as that is what Exchange 2007 is designed to use.

I have a full walk through for the installation of the certificate request and install process on my blog here:
http://blog.sembee.co.uk/archive/2008/05/30/78.aspx

Otherwise, to use a single name SSL certificate you have to make lots of changes, which is what my article above on amset.info explains, plus your external DNS provider has to support SRV records, which many do not.

Simon.

Thank you for your help. You both provided the help I sort of needed. I understand that Jowickerman linked to your own article Mestha, however he was the first to link me to what I needed. You explained it all to me so fairly you get the bulk of the points.

Thank you both!
