The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

MSFT DHCP setup for directing clients to PXE server
Tags: dhcp, pxe
Hi Experts,

I am trying to add a PXE server to my server 2003 domain, but I do not want to run it on my DHCP server.  How do I configure my DHCP server to point clients using network boot to my PXE server?  My DHCP server MSFT DHCP 5.2 running on a Server 2003 Ent AD server.  Any help would be great.

Galtar99,

I have read all of those before posting here.  Specifically, I am using a VMware appliance called UDA 1.4 running on my VI3 cluster as my PXE server.  I need my Microsoft DHCP server (lets say its 192.168.10.1) to point to my PXE server (lets say its 192.168.10.15).  I have option 60 set to "PXEClient", option 66 set to "192.168.10.15", and option 67 set to "/pxelinux.0".  However, when I try to network boot one of my client computers to it, I get "PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011."  Any ideas?

Sorry about the double post.

Cisco environment?  Do you have IP Helper setup to point to your PDHCP server?

10.26.2007 at 04:04PM PDT, ID: 20159672
No, not Cisco.  And I didn't think I would need IP Helper or a PXED (I think thats the same as a PDHCP) if both were on the same subnet with nothing (firewalls, routers) in between.  Am I wrong about this?  Is it not enough to set options 60, 66, and 67?

The PXE client, DHCP server, PDHCP server are all on the same segment?  Are DHCP and PDHCP running on the same box?

Nope, not WDS.  Since my environment is handled by VMware VI3, I am using a virtual appliance called UDA.  Unfortunately, it was designed to use a built in DHCP server, and I cannot do that as I am using Microsoft's DHCP on my DC for AD integration.  No, the DHCP is not on the same box as the PXE server.  I need the DHCP server to point my PXE clients to the PXE box, but I do not have any DHCP server running on the PXE box.  Thanks for your help so far.

Ok, it seems that I am getting somewhere.  I have set options 60,66, and 67 on my DHCP server, and now when I boot to PXE I get PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011.
At least the client is being told that there IS a PXE on the network.  Now, I have a DHCP server on my PXE server, but at the moment it is stopped (not running).  My conf is;

ddns-update-style ad-hoc;
next-server 192.168.0.5 ;

if substring ( option vendor-class-identifier, 0, 9) = "PXEClient"
{
  filename "/pxelinux.0" ;
  next-server 192.168.0.5 ;
}

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
  option routers 192.168.0.254;
  option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
  max-lease-time 300;
}

This way my DHCP on my PXE does not hand out an IP, but it should be responding to DHCP requests with a PXE offer, right?  Is this my PDHCP, or am I way out in left field?

- Dredd

10.29.2007 at 09:06AM PDT, ID: 20170656
Ok, I discovered that if I add
  "range 192.168.0.110 192.168.0.115;"
to the subnet, everything goes according to plan.  However, I do not want this DHCP handing out IPs, just PXE data.  Is what I am proposing possible?

- Dredd

10.29.2007 at 09:14AM PDT, ID: 20170735
Sorry,
To clarify this, after I added the line above to my dhcpd.conf on my PXE server, I stated the DHCP service, and tried booting to network on one of my client machines.  The client machine found the PXE server without any problems.  Now, can I remove the DHCP server, or the ability to serve ip addresses on my PXE server and maintain these results using a different command in my dhcpd.conf?  Something that will allow my PXE servers DHCP to serve out the PXE information, but not actually serve out IP addresses (IP addresses will still be handled by my MSFT DHCP on my DC).

- Dredd

11.02.2007 at 09:30AM PDT, ID: 20202310
Ok, I figured it out.  I was being really stupid.  The MSFT DHCP does not need option 60 (PXEClient) unless the PXE server resides on the same server.  Option 66 and 67 direct clients to the PXE server.  Such a simple answer...I wish I hadn't fought with getting option 60 to appear for so long.
