PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011

I am receiving the error message PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011 when I attempt to PXE boot to Windows Deployment Services.

WDS is deployed on a server with WSUS and McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator. WDS was originally installed by Windows 2003 Server Service Pack 2 a couple of months ago and has been running fine until a week or so ago.

DHCP is deployed on a separate server in this environment.

The error is intermittent, and only appears to be affecting laptops (HP compaq nx9010 in this instance). The HP desktops are PXE booting okay.

Do you witness onscreen if they actually get an address?

If not, ensure your switch have PortFast enabled.

Otherwise, make sure Option 60 is set on the DHCP scope or server.

Yes, the laptop did pick up an IP address.

I am pretty sure that I can rule out the configuration of the hubs and switches in the LAN environment because this solution has been working happily with RIS for the last couple of years and I have confirmed that no changes have been made at the network level.

I do not have option 60 available in the DHCP server options. I thought option 60 was for solutions where the DHCP was co-resident with the WDS server, but I may well be wrong.

I have tried again today, and I am getting the following error:

PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received.

Is WDS running?  Stop and Start the WDSServer service.

I did try stopping and starting the WDSServer service when the problem originally happened. I can certainly try it again, but I suspect it will not make much difference, the reason being that the HP desktops are working fine - it is just the laptops that appear to be failing.

Did you try a BIOS update?  I know it sounds weird, but we had some Dells that needed a BIOS flash before PXE worked properly.

It looks as though, ultimately, it was a combination problem. Restarting the WDS service allowed the laptop to get an IP address but then the build ran incredibly slowly and then hung half way through. I then had a look under the desk and noticed that the laptops were plugged into a hub. I took the hub out of the picture and the laptop built okay.

I have a sneaking feeling that this problem is not completely fixed yet, but fingers crossed. Thanks for your assistance, Netman66 - points well deserved for persistence.
