The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Romaing users do not renew DHCP IP addresses

Tags: Microsoft, XP
We have a situation where roaming user change location without turning the computer off. At the new location they do not get a new DHCP lease.

We have traced the traffic and we can see that the laptop sends a DHCP request to the previous DHCP server which is no longer available. It sends about 6 requests and then does nothing.

There are some client policies implemented, which we have a hard time to get details on, but what we know is, that the run buttom has been removed, and normal users cannot perform an IPconfig /release - renew (don't ask me why)

Does anyone know any of these policies and whether they are preventing the NIC to brodcast a new DHCP discover?

The IP address is renewed if the laptop is rebooted, or if a user with local admin right perform IPconfig /release - renew.

This is definitely related to Group Policy as a Local Admin can do the same. Do you have GPResult from a Client. What does it say? Can you post that here (If it shows something relevant)? What do you mean by "run buttom has been removed, and normal users cannot perform an IPconfig /release - renew (don't ask me why)"...Did you see this chance in GPResult?

I don't think this happens because of a policy, it's just the behavior of Windows. I work at a school and see this all the time with student laptops (not part of a domain or having any gpos applied). They don't turn them off, they just close the lid (putting it in standby) and expect it to just work on our network when they wake it up again. Since the machine was put to sleep when it wakes up it assumes it's in the same location with the same servers available.

The only solution is to just reboot the machine (or do an ipconfig /renew which you said they can't).

I suppose you could write a script to renew the IP that they could double click to fix it, but that probably requires elevated rights.

We have been informed that GPO's are used. The Run button simply isn't there and the people I have talk to claims it is a policy.

I have also asked if some of the users could try to perform a IPConfig /release -renew but if they find a way to launch a dos prompt, they get a 'not authorized' message when they type IPconfig /release.

On my on Thinkpad laptop I use access connections, and maybe that is why I don't have the same problem.

"they get a 'not authorized' message when they type IPconfig /release."..May be, this is the answer. They are normal users with limited rights. Laptops try and renew their existing IP but fail. Once they fail, they need to release their existing IPs and request for a new one using a Broadcast which it seems, is not allowed as they are normal users (Assumptions). Can you move few clients to a new OU and try and see if that makes a difference. What is the policy in your office as far as user rights are concerned? Is it limited, Power User or what?

obviously there are gpos in place to get rid of the run menu and other things, but I'm saying the problem with DHCP not renewing when resumed isn't related to a policy. Just tell your users to reboot when they change locations.

well telling the users just to reboot could be an option, but it is not the experience they want. They want to be able to run around and connect everywhere.

We are considering to install Thinkvantage Access connection, which seems to take care of the problem. But I don't have any GPO on my laptop either, an I thought that these might be the problem. To be honest I don't know what GPO options you have or why you would restrict anybody from performing an IPconfig /renew

"To be honest I don't know what GPO options you have or why you would restrict anybody from performing an IPconfig /renew"

Preventing people from jacking around with the network settings of a computer is just being responsible. If you let clueless people click around and change system settings at will they will hose their machines daily and make that much more work for the IT staff.

Instead of telling them to reboot, tell them to shut the machine down when they move, rather than just closing the lid.
