The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Dlink Port Forwarding
Tags: Dlink, DIR-635, DIR-635
we are trying to setup our windows 2003 server with static ip and  i'm trying to open port 3389 on the network, so i'll be able to telnet the windows machine to port 3389.
something is blocking it.

So our cable company is saying this:
Please contact your D-Link Corporation (Router) tech support they will help you to Port Forward to 3389; in our Ambit router NAT is disable, so all port are open.

I just want to make sure I call Dlink for this problem

3389 is the port used for remote desktop protocol (RDP).  If the port is open you should be able to use telnet to verify connections are possible, but won't actually be able to do anything; if the connection is successful you should see a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner - if the connection fails you should receive a message to that effect.

If Terminal Services are not installed or not running there will be nothing on your server to respond to the connection request - can you telnet to your server on port 3389 from another computer on your network?

Does the ip address of your server start with 172.x.y.z, 192.168.x.y or 10.x.y.z?

On the server, go to a command prompt (click Start, then Run, type "cmd" and click OK).

Type the command "telnet localhost 3389"  If you get this message: "Connecting To localhost...Could not open connection to the host, on port 3389" then the software you need is either not installed on your server, or is not configured - this should be sorted out before working with your router.

If you get a black screen with a blinking cursor that means telnet connected and your server is probably setup, time to config the router.

A 192.168.x.y IP address is reserved for private networks and is not valid on the internet, therefore your router must be performing NAT.  Your router has an address that is connected to the internet, you'll need to know what this is to get inbound access to your server.

Your server must have it's 192.168.x.y address staticly set.  You'll configure your router to forward port 3389 to 192.168.1.10 (or whatever your server's Ip address is).  Then, from elsewhere on the internet you can run the command "mstsc /v:1.2.3.4" to get a remote desktop to your server (where 1.2.3.4 is the publicly accessible IP address on your router).
