NIC works with static IP but won't take DHCP

I have an older Dell Inspiron laptop that will communicate when the NIC is given a static IP but absolutely won't take DHCP.  It has a clean install of XP SP3 and fresh drivers downloaded from Dell.  The network card is a 3Com 3C920.  Does anyone have any idea why it won't take a DHCP address?  Thank you all.  Start Free Trial
