If DHCP is enabled on the router and server will it cause a slow network?

Hi, a few weeks ago our router died on us, well it was a prodigy Pro box with antivirus/firewall etc and everything was working optimal. I have put a BT router in place and things seem slow now including clients taking long a time to log on to the server and intermittent connections to the internet especially with the server. there are also printing issues and just general slowness. I have just realised that the DHCP is enabled on the router and the server. Is this causing the problem and should I swich the DHCP off on the router?

The follwowing error code is also being registered 6702 and this is happening quite a lot. I have remote access and would like to try and keep the remote access rather than go onsite. I am just concerned that if I do switch off the DHCP it will cause loss of connection,

CODE 6702

DNS server has updated its own host (A) records.  In order to ensure that its DS-integrated peer DNS servers are able to replicate with this server, an attempt was made to update them with the new records through dynamic update.  An error was encountered during this update, the record data is the error code.

If this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error
should be ignored.

If this DNS server's Active Directory replication partners do not have the correct IP address(es) for this server, they will be unable to replicate with it.

To ensure proper replication:
1) Find this server's Active Directory replication partners that run the DNS server.
2) Open DnsManager and connect in turn to each of the replication partners.
3) On each server, check the host (A record) registration for THIS server.
4) Delete any A records that do NOT correspond to IP addresses of this server.
5) If there are no A records for this server, add at least one A record corresponding to an address on this server, that the replication partner can contact.  (In other words, if there multiple IP addresses for this DNS server, add at least one that is on the same network as the Active Directory DNS server you are updating.)
6) Note, that is not necessary to update EVERY replication partner.  It is only necessary that the records are fixed up on enough replication partners so that every server that replicates with this server will receive (through replication) the new data.

It sounds like all your issues are DNS related; the server needs to be the DHCP server for the DNS to function properly.
Disable the DHCP on the router. Make sure the DHCP server is assigning the router's IP tto clients as the gateway.
The serveres NIC should be asigned static IP information; the IP is outside the DHCP scope, the gateway is the routers IP, Primary DNS is the router, Secondary is the Server IP.

Tigermatt hi,

I have now disabled the routers DHCP but the server is not giving out addresses now. I have restarted one of the client machines and even though it appears to have a correct IP address and can see the server 192.168.0.61 is the client there is still very slow access when logging on. there are no addresses shown in DHCP address leases. how do I run the CEICW wizard and will this help the issue? should I perhaps give the server a reboot?

Cheers,
Chris

tigermatt, if the servers IP config doesn't have the router listed in the DNS server info, it will not have Internet access. The router needs to resolve dns requests for Internet requests from the clients.

Guys, this is getting kinda technical! and at the moment I still have the DHCP not leasing any addresses out and logon still soooo slow!.

any ideas.

Thanks for all yer help.
Chris
KCTS:

Dead right - the only place an external DNS server should appear ANYWHERE is as a forwarder in the DNS console (see http://www.petri.co.il/configure_dns_forwarding.htm, in SBS though the wizard should set this). If you do not put your own server as the one and ONLY DNS server for your domain then not only will logon be painfully slow, but you will have all manner od assicated problems as your computers will not be able to resolve internal DNS lookups.

what should the DNS forwarding address be? should this be the routers dns? or server DNS? in the forwarders tab?

cheers
Chris

Hi, yes the 006 value is set to 192.168.0.1.

It seemed to resolve it ok as well.
I did however goto manage authorized servers.

my server IP address is 192.168.0.1. there are two authorized servers showig. one is 192.168.0.1 and the other is 192.168.0.2. we only have one server, does this have anything to do with it?

Thanks.

KCTS hi,

should my scope include all the IP's from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 inclusive?

or should I be missing the first ten out for the server etc?

at the moment its setup with the first config. ad no exclusions.

Is there some way I can flush the IP addresses on the WAREHOUSE2?

This one is is still taking ages to logon. I have tried ipconfig /flushdns and then restsrt the PC but still same problem.

Cheers

I will try that,

to do this - is it for example - static ip 192.168.0.88.  then 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.254

DNS - 192.168.0.1?
Cheers
Chris
