Question

DHCP Server will not give out IP addresses

Asked by: bluetab

I've installed a second Windows 2003 Enterprise Server on the network which is acting as a second DC.  I have also added DNS and DHCP server to the server.  I've configured the DHCP server, authorized it, activated it, and configured the scope.  The problem is that the DHCP server will not hand out IP addresses.  I've tried reinstalling the DHCP server.  There are also no errors on the DHCP server for the last two weeks at which time it gave an event ID 1046.

I know you said that you configured, authorized and activated, but the 1046 error relates to a DHCP server thinking that it is not authorized.  Please see this technet article, then double check your config and let us know if you find anything.  Is your other W2K3 server also running DHCP?

also - do you have any other DHCP servers , including any on a router ?

I hope this helps !

Thanks, but I've gone through the authorization process as this link mentions but the server is still not handing out DHCP addresses.  The only other DHCP server that is setup is on the original 2003 DC.  But that server is down at the moment.

Check your DHCP bindings to your proper NIC card. Also boot up your first DHCP server and Un-Authorize the first DHCP server if you haven't already.

Also look at the DHCP statistics and look for DHCP Request statistics.

Thanks for the post.  I've unauthorized the DHCP server and made sure that it is binded correctly.   Where can look up the DHCP stats?

by: bjohnson_MNPosted on 2008-12-01 at 20:36:52ID: 23074523

In DHCP manager right click on the DHCP server and choose Display Statistics. Look for the Discovers. if the number is 0 and you know you have attempted to request an address then there is either a problem with your switch nor forwarding broadcasts to ports, your router not forwarding DHCP requests to your server or your bindings not correct.

Is your server on the same subnet or different? If on a different one did you check your DHCP forwarding address to make sure it is correct??
I believe you said you switched servers, did you change server IP's also and forget to reconfigure your forwarders??

So what is going on with this??

by: ChiefITPosted on 2008-12-12 at 21:50:01ID: 23163030

Sounds like they might have a software firewall on the server that blocks DHCPdiscovery requests.

ISA does this:

ISA 2004 rules for DHCP, ICMP:DNS ect...:

Windows firewall may also block DHCP. I know it blocks ICMP. ICMP is important in the DHCP process because after a DHCP offer the client will ping the network to see if the IP is used prior to accepting the DHCP offer from the server.
