Hi there.
Option 66 of the DHCP server can be used by vendors of different devices to auto-configure equipments via a tftp server.
For example, Cisco has a software that can auto-configure routers when a new router is plugged in the network. How is this done? The new device is configured to look for a tftp server to pick up his pre-set configuration. How does it do that? When it makes the dhcp broadcast, the server identifies its MAC and serves him the tftp server address through option 66 of DHCP server. Of course, you need to make a reservation for its MAC, setting the option 66 before plugging the new router to the network.
Another example is large deployment of IP phones. When you plug the IP phones in the network, you instruct the DHCP server to serve the IP phones the address of a tftp server. Of course that you need to upload to this server the desired configuration before that, and the devices must be configured to look at option 66, get the address of the tftp server and use the configuration uploaded there.
I'm sure there are many other uses for this option, but this is what I can think of right now.
