Question

problem receive email "Relay Access Denied" but not to all sender

Asked by: TopMasterchief

Hi,

Recently, I am having problem receiving email from my clients. But this is not happening to all of them, just some of them.
The error they received was:

Subject: Undeliverable: FW: ******
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
      Subject:  FW: *****
      Sent:     30/09/2009 8:59 AM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
***@***.com (my email address)  on 30/09/2009 8:59 AM
You do not have permission to send to this recipient.  For assistance, contact your system administrator.
            <mail.clientmailserver.com #5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1 <***@***.com(my email address)>: Relay access denied>

this happened approx with 5 clients so far.
My system is Exchange 2003

Can you please tell me what is the cause and the solution of this.

Thanks

Some of your clients are set to authenticate while others are not.

Go into the exchange system manager and set your mail server to not require authentication and ensure that relay permission is granted to your internal networks whole IP range.

would setting mail server to not require authentication cause any impact on the security?
Also, the same client that experience this error, sometime can just sent email to me without any problem      why is it ? I mean if it doesnt work, it should always doesnt work? but how come some time it works sometime its not.

thanks

If your users are internal and on the domain there is really no need for any kind of authentication.

Go ahead and change it.

by: TopMasterchiefPosted on 2009-09-30 at 19:05:42ID: 25465497

Ok I have changed it, please look at the attachment and please confirm that this is what you mean.

Also, please clarify my previous answer. I just wondering that how  come sometime the sender can just send to me, but sometime they receive the error bounced ?

Thanks

That is half ofit..under connection settings make sure you frant access to the whole internal IP subrange.
AS far as the sender sometimes being able to send and other times not that is strange.

Is this from an internal exchange mailbox to another internal exchange mailbox  or is it from one domain to another external domain.

If so, I woulod suggest that you check ans see if your exchange server's IP address is on any RBL blacklists. FOr testing purposes you could set it up to send through your ISP's smart host  (ie: smtp.isp.com)

by: TopMasterchiefPosted on 2009-09-30 at 21:01:03ID: 25465887

It is from external domain to my domain.

thing is I do not have the problem with sending message outside my domain, the problem is when people (external) try to send me an email. They got a bounced back error message (as shown).  So changing the outgoing SMTP should not make a difference ?

Thanks

Yes that is correct.
Do a mx lookup on the domain that the email is bouncing from and add that IP address to the trusted list in exchange. .

Check your exchange tracking logs and see why it is being rejected at your server.

Read this article regarding setting up exceptions and add that ip.

I have made some changes  you suggest, but the error persists, this time the sender received the error report from my backup mail server which is my ISP service.

So I think that maybe at the time the sender sent the email , with some "unknow" reason it could not contact my main smtp server (mail MX record) and thats why it passed to the backup MX that is a mail backup service from my ISP.

You think that is possible and how do I check that ?  everytime when I try telnet my smtp server, it connects fine.

Thanks

Could be...

I am out of ideas.....maybe check that the cost metrics are set up correctly for the two mx entries.

by: chokdiiPosted on 2009-10-01 at 10:59:21ID: 25471356

Usually you would use 10 and 100

by: TopMasterchiefPosted on 2009-10-06 at 21:48:52ID: 25512284

Found the problem!
MX seemed to point to a email backup service address that does not exist anymore, so it gave the error accordingly.
Removed the MX and it seems to be OK now.

However, the settings you advised missed one important bit (might be that I didnt give enough info on my system)  but unticking "Integrated Windows Auth" will stop Exchange to Authenticate the other Exchange. For me, it stopped the replication of the public folder between Exchanges. Once I have it ticked, everything seems to be back to normal.

Anyway  Thanks

by: TopMasterchiefPosted on 2009-10-06 at 21:50:01ID: 31635182

Part of it is correct. But the settings suggested caused another problem. However, as mentioned  might be because i didnt give enough info on my system.

Yeah,
I didn't realize that you had more than one exchange box running.

If oyu have only one that setting is inconsequential.
Glad to hear you got your problem fixed.
