Question

Dynamic DNS Update failing Active Directory Integrated Zones

Asked by: MarlinTechSupport

Hi All, On my network i have most machines joined to our domain and managed in some way.

There are a few units that are not domain members.

These fail to register themselves at all with DNS let alone in the appropriate zones.

Advanced DNS settings are as follows for all DHCP Servers and scopes:
Enabled DNS Dynamic updates
Always dynamically update a and ptr
Discard a and prt when deleted
Dynamically update a and ptr for dhcp clients that do not request updates all enabled

My DC's run server 2k3, both are dhcp and DNS servers.

When I tell any device ipconfig/registerdns the dhcp log shows that it just renewed the address (type 11) not 30, 31 or 32 like I would expect.

We are shutting off WINS asap but I need non domain machines to properly participate in DNS first.  On my test client I have disabled netbios over tcpip/wins.

I know I will need to provide more information but i am at a loss!!

Help please, This is making less sense as I get further into it.

Hi.

For non-domain members, you must check the box on the client "use this machines DNS suffix in domain registration."  Make sure to add your domain suffix (mydomain.com) to the box.  After that is done, they will update dynamically.

Hi wdurrett, thanks for the response

On the NIC card for my test client (non member), I went into the nic, TCP/IP, advanced, dns, and set DNS suffix for this connection to: myactualdomain.com
Register this connections address in DNS is checked
Use this connections dns suffix in dns registration is checked
Still does not appear in DNS.

Seems to me that should have worked.  Am I missing something.?

you may need to reboot the machine after making those changes.

are your clients set to use the DNS servers in your domain only by DHCP?

I forgot to mention I did an ipconfig/registerdns but I will reboot anyway.  In my domain..? I believe so, I know for a fact we do not specify using GPO or static entries except on servers with static IP's, all workstations use dhcp member or not.  Forgive my ignorance, is there another way I am forgetting?   I'll let you know if the reboot helped when I get home and connect in a little bit later.

Still not registered post reboot.  same line entry in dhcp log.  I must be missing something.

Check whether the client has received the IP from DHCP.

If your DNS server is Active directory integrated DNS, then check for the dynamic update type.

If it has Secure only under the Dynamic update, then defeintly it won't allow the non domain client record to update on the DNS.Change it to "Secure and non-secure" option.

Let me know whether it helps for you..

Hi Venutajav, On all subnets On both Servers Dynamic is set to Secure and Non secure, the client is recieving IP via DHCP.

I would mess with the credentials for dynamic update but what I find way more interesting is this entry in the DHCP log file every time the unit is told ipconfig /registerdns

11,11/04/09,10:25:05,Renew,192.168.10.111,machinename.,MAC Address,

Shouldn't i see something like

30/31/32, 11/04/09,10:29:06,UPDATE?,192.168.10.111, machinename.,MAC Address?

I dont see a single one of these!

I have missed to post in the last comment. The dhcp server in the domain must be an authorized one. if the DHCP is authorizied by AD, then only domain computer can able to get IP from the DHCP server.

Is all non domain member have this problem right?

by: MarlinTechSupportPosted on 2009-11-17 at 15:28:55ID: 25845400

Mostly, sorry for my absence on the question.  It seems to be hit or miss with non somain machines.  I did get it working by manually configuring non domain member computers with a dns suffix of mydomainname.com.  Not connection specific DNS suffix, a machine dns suffix.

This is still a P.I.T.A. for us though, especially when it seems to work for for some and not others.

We have several machines I reghosted with the same image, all identical hardware, and some update/register, others do not.  With no rhyme or reason.  I know it's not really net bois or WINS cause I disabled that manually on all devices Im using to test at this point.

Ever seen this before?  Also my original observation that there is never a registration entry in the log when a device succesfully or unsuccesfully for that matter updates I dont get the purpose of that log file...

Solution was to add dns suffix to computer name not connection and make sure Change Primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes check box is selected.  Also Secure and non secure dynamic updates must be enabled.  I still dont understand the logs no one ever got back to me on that.
