Question

DNS Error - Cannot Find Server (only ONE website/IP and only in my network, rest of internet OK ;-)

Asked by: madmx78

I am working on a website, and today for some reason I have started to get "Cannot Find Server, or DNS Error" when opening the page in Internet Explorer on XP Home.
I opened the page successfully yesterday. FTP and  emails are not working either. I can ping the IP address.

I have no other problems with any other web pages, ftp sites etc.  I have tried sites I have never visited before.  I have confirmed that I can see sites hosted with the same company.

I've asked my friends and contacts to try the site and they can all open the webpage without any problems.

The hosting company has run tests and there is no problem at their end.

I have two computers on this network, both XP home. None of them can see the site.

I am sitting behind a NTL cable modem and netgear wireless router, with a secure but flat configuration, there's no restrictions on the router, and it is configured to be issued with DNS server addresses dynamically.  DNS requests are passing through the router correctly, and the IP address I am receiving is correct.

What is happening?

Just in case you ask, and even though this condition exists on two separate workstations - my network settings on *this workstation* have not changed and as far as I can remember I have not installed or changed any settings since I was looking at the site yesterday.

------ This very similar question has been submitted on EE before (I have used the original wording by "siliconbrit" and changed to suit my situation) and solution was to contact the ISP. But I have spoken to my ISP and they have asked me to try accessing the website via a proxy server (which was not possible) and the ISP told me the hosting company should check the DNS settings. I am technical to an extent.

It is very frustrating as I have alot of work need doing and deadlines but I cannot even access my own website.

How this two machines accessing internet? Try to add the host record in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC\hosts file. Is this website is able to access via other private network?

If this add the follownig line in the host file, how your dns queries whether into local DNS or pointed to public dns.

What result do you get while applying NSLookup on your site?
Like: NSLookup www.yoursite.com
Also try name resolution using other DNS server (like openDNS)
Like NSLookup www.yoursite.com 208.67.222.222
or
Like NSLookup www.yoursite.com 208.67.220.220

Have your tried to open your website using IP address?
http://<your website ip address>

Open your Network Connections folder (in the Control Panel)
Right-click on your network connection (usually shows as Local Area Connection, or something similar)
Click "Repair" in the menu.
This will renew your ip address, and clean out the DNS resolver and ARP caches, among other things.
Start>Run
Type "cmd" without the quotes, and hit enter to get the command prompt.
If you know the actual ip address of your site, then ping it, and see if you get a response. If you do, then ping by the domain name. If you get a response that way, try browsing the website again.
If you get timeouts or errors anywhere in this process, post them here.

It appears you are using cPanel for that server.  It you are getting page cannot be displayed, you can check the linux server for errors by doing (if you have ssh access):
tail -f /etc/httpd/logs/error_log

What are your results when you do the nslookup on your computer vs. your friends?  I run a cPanel hosting service and we see things like this when clients change DNS quite frequently.  Has the DNS info changed for the website in the past couple days?  Bad DNS caching can cause this and it depends on your ttl on your DNS records for that server.

I would suggest checking the DNS against the OpenDNS servers as well.  You can even set your workstation to use the OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP's just to be sure.  Please post your results.

madmx78:

Try this :

Contact your ISP ask for other DNS Server's IP. Then use it.. IF they dont have other DNS try to change the primary DNS to secondary or the DNS ip near your route.

Example:

IP Address: 10.10.1.123
DNS (primary): 192.168.0.1
(secondary) 10.10.1.100

Change the DNS primary to 10.10.1.100

Then go to start --> run
type: cmd
then type --> ipconfig /flushdns
then ipconfig /registerdns

IF this still doesnt work better use proxy for the meantime..

Visit --> http://www.hide-ip-soft.com/  download and install that software. This software automatically find proxy servers and configure your Web Browser.

farhankazi:
In my understanding CPANEL uses virtual DNS.. I believe using http://<ip address> wont help.

dr_shivan:
the 5 limitation for XP is only for File Sharing in this case its a DNS issue.

I hope this helps..

The problem is now resolved. It was the IP address. My server banned my IP due to refresh rate or spam related features as a security measure. I was advised this way anyway. I have now closed the case and distributed points accordingly to the ones who come up with closest answers.
Please do not post any more comments.
