Question

DNS Map external ip to internal ip

Asked by: estanton

I have a web site that I would like internal and external users to be able to access using the same ip address. If I am outside the network I can type in the external ip address and get to the web site. If I am inside the network I have to type in the internal (NAT) address.
I am using a PIX and windows server 2003 DNS.
This seems like it should be pretty easy to set up in windows server 2003 DNS. This first DNS server the internal users get to is the 2003 server inside the network, then the request is forwarded out.

Hi!

Create forward lookup zone for external DNS domain on your internal DNS server. Go to administrative tools, DNS, right click Forward lookup zones and select create new zone.
If forward lookup zone already exists, add new host (A) record for website and enter internal IP address.

If you need more detailed explanation, let me know...

I can not get it to work. The web site is only accessed by ip. That would seem to make a difference here. Our internal DNS server is not authoritative for our domain.

You can make your internal DNS server authoritative for external DNS domain by adding forward lookup zone to internal DNS server. What it means that your server is accessed only by IP? Did you want to say that server is accessible only by IP? That is normal, when name resolution does not work.

is it authorative for your local (internal domain)???

What you are talking about it making a loopback, which cannot be done.  Your only hope is the way that toniur pointed out, where you tell your internal clients that the local ip address is = the external DNS name.

Not the server, the web site. To get to the web site you enter the ip, not a name.

You cannot loopback to your external IP address unless your originate from a different *routable* IP address...
