DNS and SPF checks

Could someone explain to me what is required for an SPF record? And how exactly it works?

My company has joined a parent company. Eventual we will join their domain and integrate with Exchange, AD fully.

For the time being I have changed the FQDN of my Exchange to Mailuk.TheirDomain.com so we can email outbound under their banner. The parent company has set up a new A record for my exchange serer and my ISP has set up the reverse PTR.

My parent company has a SPF record so I believe I need my server added to this. From what I can tell they have set up an SPF record under my FQDN of mailuk.theirdomain.com associated to my public IP. However this does not seem to be working i.e. some emails are still bouncing under the new banner because of an SPF check.

Which SPF record is checked and needs to be updated? i.e. Mailuk.TheirDomain.com or TheirDomain.com? I am getting confused as to exactly what is now required to pass this check.
