I want to set up a web server at home for a few months (so I can configure it, and then have it hosted elsewhere).
I have setup a CustomDNS account at dyndns.com (which includes the Dynamic DNS service), installed the Dyndns client on my computer, and it seems that the redirection is going fine (ie: an nslookup finds my home IP address). However, I have 3 problems:
a) I just found out my ISP blocks port 80,
b) I am having problems with my router (loopback?), so I cannot get to my webserver on my LAN, and
c) I am frustrated because I am blind - I can't really see what's going on from the internet side (who knows if it is working great from the internet side?). So here are my questions:
1. How do I configure a) IIS, b) the DynDns client, c) my router and d) the Dyndns service to route on a different port than port 80 ?
- Please note I do understand what port forwarding is on a router so I can do that if needed
- Please let me know what port I should choose as an alternative to 80 (or better yet, provide me 2 ports in case my ISP say also blocks port 8080, for instance)
- Please let me know if I also need to include the port in the URL (ex: mysite.com:8080). This is acceptible for me since I just want to configure my site temporarily, and it would not go live until I move it to somewhere which has a static IP
2. Any idea on how to solve router loopback ? I heard I could do something with my HOSTS file maybe ?
3. I want to see what is going on from the outside world. I saw a post that said
www.pcriot.com somehow would allow me to do that. But pcriot seems to be down. Is there anywhere else I can go to see exactly what seems to be happening with my site from the internet side ?
Thanks, Pete
