DNS and sending mail?

I'm configuring VMWare labs to mimik a real world network.

I have two forests on the same virtual network. Each domain/forest has a DC with DNS pointing to itself for resolution.

Everything works great including the exchange servers and I can forward mail locally.

Now I'm trying to send mail from one forest to another forest.

I can ping all the other forests DC's and Exchange servers however I can't ping DOMAIN2.COM from DOMAIN1.COM and vice versa.

Now I already made my SMTP connector with the * Address space on the side I'm sending mail to.
I also have the MX Records on each side.

Can someone help me get mail sent from one forest to the other?

as I said in your previous thread about your NSLOOKUP not working, do you have your DNS AD integrated?

Yes I do but I havent tried again since you fixed my last issue by creating the reverse zone.

Off work but will try again tomorrow.

I believe you'll need to create a secondary DNS zone on each DNS server for the opposite domain:

DC1:  create secondary DNS zone for DOMAIN2.COM
DC2:  create secondary DNS zone for DOMAIN1.COM

that should fix your problem.

So it's not a missing record in my DNS?

Would creating a secondary zone simulate how the internet works when forwarding mail to different domains?

FIXED haha it works Iwow that was easy. So basically what I did was simulate how the internet root servers work? THey basically cach everyones registered domain name with secondary zones?

To be honest, I'm not sure, but I suspect that the root DNS servers on the internet are a bit more complex than that.  The basic theory would be similar, though.
