Browse All TopicsI am installing SBS 2008 on a new server and I want to host my own SharePoint Server 2007 sites.
One of the wizards in 2008 setup is called Internet Address Management. Microsoft allows 1 of 2 options in the wizard:
Opton 1: Let the server do the domain management. To do this, you must pick 1 of their 3 listed "domain name providers" (eNom, GoDaddy or Register.com). I think by domain name provider, they mean domain registration company
Option 2: Manage the domain name yourself. To do this, the wizard says you must sign into the web site of the domain name provider and manually configure the DNS records.
.I want to do option 1, but my registration company is not one of the chosen ones. Therefore, I assume I have to use options 2.
I contacted my domain registration company, MelbourneIT.com, and they told me that they do not have a standalone DNS management tool, so I can't manage the DNS records and they don't do it. I can however, register namespaces through them.
Again, I want to host the MOSS site myself. Do I have to transfer my domain to one of the 3 listed providers or do I have to find one that has DNS management tools?
One thing I don't understand is if I don't need to manually modify the DNS records for the chosen 3, why do I have to do so for the non-chosen ones? Also, is the wizard really telling me that I cannot self host?
